🇹🇭 Care · early learning · safe handover
Childcare, nurseries and preschool in Thailand
Thailand has an appealing range of bilingual nurseries, international preschools, private kindergartens, local child-development centres and school-linked early years. The difficult part is not finding a friendly website. It is identifying what the exact premises is legally authorised to provide, which authority oversees it and whether its daily care is as strong as its curriculum language.

The short answer
How should families research early-years care in Thailand?
Begin with the child’s age and the service actually needed, then ask the provider to name its legal category, issuing authority and current registration or school licence. Thailand’s Early Childhood Development Act defines early childhood broadly and coordinates several ministries, so there is no safe assumption that every venue using ‘nursery’, ‘daycare’ or ‘international preschool’ has the same approval. Formal private-school provision can be checked through OPEC; other centres should identify the relevant welfare, local-government or education authority and provide premises-specific evidence.
Understand what each provider is offering
Four types of care that can look similar online
A provider's name may describe its teaching approach or language rather than its legal category. Check who is responsible for the child, which premises are covered and which authority oversees the service.
Nursery / daycare
Care-led provision may sit outside the formal private-school route and can involve welfare or local oversight.
Child-development centre
A locally administered service may operate within national early-childhood and local-government standards.
Anuban / kindergarten
A formal private kindergarten or school early-years stage belongs in the education evidence file.
Playgroup / enrichment
Parent-accompanied or short classes are not automatically a substitute for registered childcare or preschool.
Childcare varies by location

This is a planning comparison, not a directory or provider endorsement. Swipe the table on smaller screens.
| Family base | What you are likely to find | What can make planning harder | What to ask for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bangkok | The widest mix of international, bilingual, school-linked and local provision across many parts of the city. | Traffic can turn a short nursery day into an exhausting journey; a famous brand may have several campuses with different approvals and facilities. | Exact campus licence, age-room place, opening calendar, journey at both handovers and a named paediatric emergency destination. |
| Chiang Mai | A smaller bilingual and international market with potentially shorter routines when home and centre align. | Seasonal PM2.5 changes outdoor play, ventilation and continuity; specialist or alternative places are thinner. | Indoor-air measurements, filtration/closure policy, actual outdoor rules, staff continuity and fallback care. |
| Phuket | International nurseries and school-linked early years are spread across the north, centre and south of the island. | Road dependence, wet-season disruption, pools and split campuses can make an apparently convenient island location difficult in practice. | A timetable based in one practical area, authorised transport, pool and boundary controls, emergency access and continuity into the next stage. |
Four checks before accepting a place
A pleasant tour does not answer every question
A calm room at 10am tells you little about registration, late-day staffing, safeguarding or emergency response. Ask each question in writing and keep the answer.
Identity and authority
A marketing name may not match the licensed operator, premises or approved level.
People in the room
A published ratio means little if staff are shared, absent or replaced throughout the day.
Safeguarding and handover
Young children depend on predictable supervision, reporting and authorised collection.
Health and emergency
Heat, air quality, allergies, infection, pools and traffic require premises-specific action.
A useful way to compare providers
Which authority is responsible for the childcare service?
Do not rely on the English name alone. Ask which authority covers the exact service, then confirm the answer directly with that authority.
Early-childhood policy
The 2019 Act sets an integrated national approach for children under six and pre-primary development.
OPEC / Ministry route
Use the authorised-school search for relevant formal private kindergarten or school provision.
Local-government centre
Ask the municipality or local authority to confirm a child-development centre and its complaint route.
Welfare or other authority
For nursery/daycare outside the school route, require the provider to identify and evidence the correct authority.
Follow one ordinary day
Check what happens throughout an ordinary day
Ask the provider to talk you through these moments for your child's actual age group. Arrivals, meals, sleep and collection can tell you more about daily care than a list of activities.
- 1Arrival
Named handover
Authorised adult, attendance record, health observation and belongings/medicine transfer.
- 2Care
Food, sleep and intimate care
Allergy segregation, safe sleep, nappies/toileting, hygiene and written records.
- 3Learning
Play and language
Real weekly plan, Thai/English deployment, outdoor time and age-appropriate practice.
- 4Changeover
Ratios through the whole day
Lunches, staff breaks, mixed-age periods, late care and relief cover—not a tour-time snapshot.
- 5Collection
Secure release
ID/PIN method, late pickup, custody restrictions, incident report and no-child-left check.
Compare the care you can actually use
Check the timetable and terms, not only the monthly fee
Compare the complete arrangement. Opening hours, closures and notice terms can matter more to family life than a small difference in fees.
| Part of the agreement | What to confirm before payment | What can cause problems |
|---|---|---|
| Place and settling | Named child, start date, age room, settling sessions, key person and trial/withdrawal process | A deposit reserves a brand, not the promised room or start date |
| Complete fees | Registration, deposit, tuition, meals, nappies, transport, activities, late pickup, tax and annual increases | A low headline fee with compulsory extras and no refund trigger |
| Calendar and hours | Opening/collection windows, term dates, staff-training days, public holidays and emergency closures | School-style hours sold as full working-day childcare |
| Health and absence | Illness exclusions, medicines, allergies, outbreaks, immunisation records, emergency consent and fee treatment | Policies discovered only after the child is excluded or needs medicine |
| Notice and records | Notice period, refund rules, suspension/termination, complaints, privacy, photographs and portable progress/health records | Long notice, weak refund rights or no usable handover record |
Research before the move
Arrive with two well-researched options
You can complete most of the important research before travelling. Use an in-person visit to see how staff and children interact and confirm the premises, rather than starting the search from scratch.
- 01
Fix the required week
Write ages, days, hours, language, sleep/feeding, inclusion and the maximum complete annual budget.
- 02
Shortlist exact premises
Keep home, work, hospital and nursery within one practical part of Bangkok, Chiang Mai or Phuket.
- 03
Verify before applying
Reconcile operator, address, licence/category, ages and official record before an application or deposit.
- 04
Interview the room
Meet the actual manager and lead, request policies and answer a scenario about allergy, injury, non-collection or poor air.
Fit childcare into everyday family life
The place also needs to work with your journeys and backup plan
Consider the child's next school, healthcare, lawful in-home help and your ordinary working week alongside the childcare place itself.
Common questions
Questions about childcare and preschool in Thailand
What is the difference between nursery, preschool and kindergarten in Thailand?
The English labels are not reliable legal categories. A nursery may be care-led, while an anuban/kindergarten or school-linked early-years stage may sit in formal education. Ask for the Thai official name, exact authorised service, issuing authority and premises-specific certificate.
How can I check a private kindergarten in Thailand?
Search the Office of the Private Education Commission’s authorised-school system using the official school name and location, then match the displayed operator, campus and levels to the provider’s documents. Ask OPEC or the responsible provincial education office about any mismatch.
Can a nursery care for a foreign child in Thailand?
Many do, but admission, documents, language support and immigration-linked records are provider-specific. Confirm the child’s accepted identity/visa documents, authorised age group and exact start date before paying.
What staff ratio should a Thailand nursery have?
Do not rely on one internet number across every category and age. Ask which binding standard applies to this provider, then record the enrolled and actually present children, adults, qualifications, break cover and mixed-age arrangements in the exact room.
Should we choose a bilingual or international preschool?
Choose the strongest verified care and safeguarding environment that meets the family’s language and later-school plan. ‘International’ can describe curriculum or marketing; it does not replace local authorisation, stable staff, child protection or a workable commute.
How should Chiang Mai nurseries handle smoke season?
Ask for measured indoor-air evidence, filtration specifications and maintenance, thresholds for outdoor activity or closure, parent communication and fee/continuity arrangements. Families with respiratory concerns should discuss the plan with an appropriate clinician.
Can a Thailand preschool collect children by minibus?
Only use transport after verifying the operator, vehicle, driver, supervising adult, restraint practice, route, attendance handover, heat/no-child-left checks, insurance and emergency procedure. A school logo on a van is not enough.
What should we pay before seeing a nursery?
Keep payment exposure low until the premises, operator, authority, room, start date, fee schedule and refund trigger are evidenced. If a waiting-list fee is non-refundable, understand exactly what it buys and what happens when the promised room or date is unavailable.
