Run two numbers until the identity migration is proven
Use a local number for destination life, but keep the UK number capable of receiving critical messages while you change and test recovery methods one service at a time. Porting, cancelling and changing devices together is an avoidable lockout.

A registered SIM cannot fix a blocked device IMEI
Do it through the official Customs route. Indonesian Customs says phones, cellular handheld computers and tablets acquired abroad require IMEI registration to use an Indonesian cellular network. Taxes depend on customs value and allowance; roaming on a foreign SIM is treated differently.

Test the exact unit, not the building brochure
Technology, provider, advertised and measured speeds, upload, latency and data/fair-use terms.
Router location, concrete walls, floor area, mesh need, wired ports and power stability.
Installation date, landlord consent, minimum term, deposit, relocation and cancellation.
Different mobile network if possible, hotspot plan, power bank/UPS and alternate work site.
- Run several tests from the actual work and study locations at peak call times.
- Check upload, latency and packet stability—not download speed alone.
- Make a video call with cameras on while another device streams or uploads.
- Test mobile signal indoors with doors/windows in their normal position.
- Ask what happens during local power cuts and who controls building network equipment.

Questions about mobile phones and internet in Southeast Asia
Should I keep my UK mobile number after moving abroad?
Usually keep it until every bank, government service, insurer and account recovery route has been tested overseas. Check the provider permits long-term roaming or overseas residence, maintain payment and add non-SMS recovery options where possible.
Can foreigners buy a local SIM in Southeast Asia?
Yes in common circumstances, but registration is mandatory and documents vary. Use an operator's official shop or authorised channel, register in your own name and keep the confirmation. Tourist and resident validity can differ.
Will my UK phone work with an Indonesian SIM?
A phone obtained outside Indonesia may need its IMEI registered with Customs to use an Indonesian cellular network. Inbound roaming with a foreign SIM does not require IMEI registration. Declare and register through the official route on arrival; duties/taxes can apply.
Do tourists need to register SIMs in the Philippines?
Yes. The SIM Registration Act requires foreign tourists to provide passport, Philippine address evidence and a return/onward ticket. The tourist SIM is temporarily valid for 30 days under the Act; other visa holders provide applicable immigration, work or study evidence.
Is an airport SIM the best option?
It can be a useful arrival bridge, but compare validity, renewal, resident conversion, number retention, eSIM support and coverage at the home and school. Do not make a short tourist product the only number attached to long-term banking.
How do we test broadband before signing a lease?
Ask for the exact provider and plan, run wired and Wi-Fi tests at work/school-call times, inspect router placement and mobile backup coverage, and check installation lead time, minimum term, relocation and cancellation charges.
Should the family use eSIMs?
They are useful for an arrival bridge and dual-number setup if devices support them. Confirm the plan can receive SMS, make local calls, be topped up and remain valid—not all travel data eSIMs provide a normal local number.
How can remote workers avoid an internet single point of failure?
Use fixed broadband plus a mobile provider with a genuinely different network path where possible, a charged power bank/UPS, hotspot-capable device and a tested alternate work location. Check employer security rules before using public Wi-Fi.
Can a child's SIM be registered in their own name?
Rules vary. In the Philippines, a minor's SIM is registered under the parent or guardian under the Act. Elsewhere, operator age and identity rules apply. Keep family numbers under truthful ownership with recovery access.
