Driving in Southeast Asia
A rental counter can give you keys without giving you legal entitlement or insurance cover. Build the driving chain from the vehicle class backwards: local permission, the correct UK category, the correct IDP where required, and a policy that covers what you are actually doing.

The destination must recognise the documents, the UK licence must cover the vehicle category, the vehicle must be lawful and the insurer must accept the driver and use. Failure at one link can turn a minor collision into a major family liability.

Five destinations, four different document routes
These are the current UK-government travel positions for short-stay driving. Residents should confirm the local conversion or application route and deadline.

Choose transport by repeated journey
The safest answer may change by city and season
Rail / school transport
Strong where routes and supervision fit the school-home corridor; inspect operator, belts, pickup, adult supervision and delay communication.
Driver / ride-hail
Useful while learning the city. Verify driver/vehicle match, child restraint plan, seat belts and a fallback when rain or peak demand removes supply.
Family car
Control and weather protection, but price parking, finance, insurance, licence conversion, flood exposure and the daily mental load.
Motorcycle / scooter
Convenient but physically exposed. Licence, helmet fit, insurance and a sober risk decision matter more than local popularity.
Before buying or leasing
Run a two-week transport trial
- Travel the school, work and clinic routes at the actual times, including rain or darkness.
- Record journey variability, not the fastest result, and identify safe pickup/parking locations.
- Test the child-seat or belt installation in the exact vehicle; do not assume availability.
- Price driver, taxis, school bus and self-driving as complete monthly systems.
- Confirm local licence timing, purchase/lease eligibility, insurance and claims language in writing.
- Choose a flood, breakdown and late-night fallback before the routine fails.

Questions about driving in Southeast Asia
Can I drive in Southeast Asia on a UK licence?
There is no regional rule. Thailand currently requires a UK licence plus a 1968 IDP; Malaysia a UK licence plus a 1949 IDP; Vietnam a UK licence plus a 1968 IDP; Indonesia does not accept the UK licence alone but accepts a UK-issued IDP; and the Philippines permits a valid UK licence for up to 90 days.
Where can I get an International Driving Permit?
Obtain it in the UK before travel through a participating PayPoint store under the current GOV.UK process. Choose the convention version listed for the destination. An IDP is a supporting document, not a new vehicle entitlement.
Does a car licence cover a scooter?
Not automatically. You need the correct motorcycle entitlement for the vehicle class under both the underlying licence and local law. A rental shop handing over keys does not prove you are licensed or insured.
Do residents need a local driving licence?
Usually plan to obtain or convert to the destination licence rather than renewing tourist arrangements indefinitely. Timing and eligibility depend on immigration status and local authority rules; Thailand and Indonesia, for example, describe resident routes for eligible foreign nationals.
Will travel insurance cover a scooter accident?
Only if the policy covers the activity and you meet its licence, helmet, engine-size, alcohol and other conditions. Invalid local entitlement can defeat both vehicle and medical cover. Obtain the insurer's wording, not a rental desk assurance.
Should families drive immediately after arrival?
Not necessarily. Use a reputable driver, taxi or ride-hailing service while learning routes, road culture, school access, flooding and parking. Then decide whether self-driving is safer and genuinely useful in that city.
What should we do after a road accident?
Prioritise safety and medical help, follow local legal requirements, contact police and the insurer, record vehicles, location, witnesses and damage, and avoid signing documents you do not understand. Country rules differ—for example, leaving a Malaysian accident scene before police arrive is illegal.
Can children ride on scooters in Southeast Asia?
Legality, helmets and child-passenger rules vary, but legal does not mean acceptably safe. A child's helmet fit, seating, visibility, weather and the high vulnerability of two-wheel travel should be part of the family decision; use safer transport where available.
Can we buy or lease a car before receiving a local licence?
Ownership, registration, finance, insurance and driving permission are separate. Do not commit until the insurer confirms the named drivers, licence stage, vehicle use and claims process in writing.
