Remote work · dependants · school status
Digital nomad visas for families in Southeast Asia
A route can welcome a laptop-working principal while leaving the spouse, child or overseas employer exposed. The family version of remote work is a five-part decision: immigration, school, spouse activity, tax and employer permission.

The short answer
Where are the clearest family routes?
Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia publish identifiable remote-worker categories. Vietnam and the Philippines do not offer a like-for-like family nomad route. That does not rank the countries: duration, evidence, spouse work, school status and tax can reverse the apparent winner.
Like-for-like comparison
Five countries, three dedicated starting routes
Use the official links and country guides before acting. Swipe the table on smaller screens.
| Country | Starting route | Practical horizon | Family position | Work boundary |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 🇹🇭 Thailand | DTV | Five-year visa validity; up to 180 days per entry | Eligible spouse and dependent children may apply; a child studying as the main purpose may need Non-ED | Designed for eligible overseas remote work/freelance activity—not Thai employment |
| 🇲🇾 Malaysia | DE Rantau | Up to 12 months plus one renewal; maximum published total 24 months | Eligible dependants can join | Principal's qualifying remote activity; dependant spouse cannot work on dependant status |
| 🇮🇩 Indonesia | E33G | Limited-stay remote-worker category; verify current portal grant and renewal | Use the exact linked E31 or other applicable family category | Duties for an overseas company; local work needs a different analysis |
| 🇻🇳 Vietnam | No dedicated family nomad route | E-visa up to 90 days is a scouting tool | Durable residence normally depends on employer, investment or eligible family sponsorship | Do not assume visitor status permits remote work |
| 🇵🇭 Philippines | No dedicated nomad route | Visitor extensions can support a reversible stay; SRRV may fit a principal aged 40+ | Route-specific spouse/child rules | Visitor status does not authorise local work; resolve remote activity, tax and employer exposure |
The five-system test
Visa approval is only one green light
Immigration
Does the route permit the principal's exact overseas work?
Dependants
Can spouse and children join, for the same practical horizon?
School
Does each child need student status or school sponsorship?
Tax
Could days, source or remittance create filing and payment?
Employer
Are payroll, labour, data and corporate risks approved?
Route-fit scenarios
The same family can get three different answers
One remote principal, non-working spouse
DE Rantau may create a clean Malaysian test if the principal qualifies and the spouse genuinely will not work. DTV may also fit, but child study status must be resolved.
Two separate activities
Do not hide adult two inside “dependant”. Each adult needs their work covered; employer approval and local tax/employment consequences may decide the country.
Two children, three-plus years
A 24-month nomad route may be too short. Compare employer, capital-backed or other durable status before paying multi-year school and housing costs.
Evidence file
Prove the remote job and the family
- Employer or client contracts matching the route's definition and income period.
- A written employer decision covering country, duration, payroll, data and insurance.
- Marriage, birth, adoption or custody evidence in the accepted authenticated form.
- Bank, income, insurance, police, health and accommodation evidence required by the exact route.
- Child status and school documents, plus the spouse's independent work decision.
- A compliance calendar for entry periods, reporting, renewal, tax review and departure.
Do not relabel local work as remote. A destination-based client base, local employer, local management or locally registered business may need a different route and professional analysis.

Questions about family relocation
Which Southeast Asian country has the best digital nomad visa for families?
Malaysia's DE Rantau and Thailand's DTV are the clearest starting points for eligible remote workers, while Indonesia lists E33G. ‘Best’ depends on time horizon, dependant structure, school status, spouse work, evidence and the employer's risk position.
Can my family join a digital nomad visa?
Some routes allow eligible dependants, but each person still needs an application and relationship evidence. Children may need separate student status, and a dependant spouse may not inherit work permission.
Can both parents work remotely under one principal visa?
Do not assume so. The second adult's activity must be covered by their own or linked status. Malaysia expressly says a DE Rantau dependant spouse cannot work on dependant status.
Can children attend international school?
Country and route rules differ. Thailand's official DTV guidance says a child studying as the main purpose should use the education route. Ask the school and immigration authority for the exact child-status process elsewhere.
Does a nomad visa make foreign income tax-free?
No. Tax residence, income source, remittance, employer payroll and corporate-presence rules are separate from immigration permission. Obtain cross-border advice before working from the destination.
Can an overseas employer refuse the arrangement?
Yes. Even where immigration permits remote work, the employer may face labour, payroll, data-security, insurance, social-security or corporate-presence concerns and may reasonably restrict countries or time.
Is Vietnam's 90-day e-visa a digital nomad visa?
No. It is an electronic entry permission for an approved temporary visit. It does not create a durable family residence or work solution.
Can we work from the Philippines on visitor extensions?
Do not infer work permission from extension availability. Visitor status remains temporary, and remote work can still raise immigration, Philippine-source income and employer questions.
What documents do remote-worker routes commonly need?
Expect route-specific passport, relationship, employment/client, income or bank, insurance, police or health and accommodation evidence. Confirm certification, translation and freshness before ordering documents.
How should we compare routes?
Map every person, school status, the second adult's work, maximum practical horizon, renewal/cancellation risk, total fees/capital and tax/employer consequences. Eliminate any option with an unresolved row.
