Family visas for moving to Bali

Bali has no separate immigration system: every route is Indonesian. Current E-codes are more useful than legacy B211A-era blog labels, and every adviser should be able to show the exact live category, sponsor and permitted activity.

The short answer

Which route should a family examine first?

A qualifying remote worker may investigate E33G; a child in primary or secondary education may use E30A; eligible spouses and children of residence-permit holders use E31 family categories; Second Home and investment routes serve different capital-backed cases. Verify the live portal detail before payment.

Current route map

Four starting points—and their limits

This is an issue-spotting table, not an eligibility decision. Route codes, evidence and permissions must be checked against the issuing authority before payment.

01

Useful for

E33G remote-worker residence

The remote-worker category listed by Indonesian Immigration

The official visa index lists E33G as a limited-stay remote-worker route, alongside separate spouse/child categories.

At our verification date the official detail page did not publish the route's requirements. Verify the live e-Visa portal and use a licensed professional; do not rely on old blog criteria.

02

Useful for

E30A student residence

Primary or secondary education at an eligible institution

The official index lists a dedicated primary/secondary student category.

A child's student permission does not itself grant parents work rights; parent/dependant routes must be confirmed.

03

Useful for

E31 family categories

Eligible spouse or child of an Indonesian limited/permanent-stay holder

E31B and E31E are listed for spouse and child relationships to qualifying holders.

The sponsor's status and relationship documents control eligibility; family status is not automatically work authorisation.

04

Useful for

Second Home / retiree / investor categories

Households meeting the relevant financial, age or investment route

Indonesia lists longer-term categories, with route-specific dependants and validity.

Capital, proof, permitted activity and maintenance obligations differ. Match the current index code before paying an intermediary.

A visual decision tool

Indonesia's family visa code decoder

The first letter-and-number combination matters. It identifies the legal purpose more reliably than an agency nickname.

1

E33G

Remote worker

For duties for an overseas company; verify current evidence and dependant structure in the live portal.

2

E30A

School student

Dedicated primary and secondary education category with school/guarantor documentation.

3

E31B / E31E

Spouse / child

Family categories linked to a qualifying ITAS/ITAP holder.

4

E33

Second Home family

Capital/proof obligations and no-work assumptions must be checked against the exact subtype.

Decision rule: Make the adviser write five things on one page: current E-code, legal sponsor, length of stay, permitted activity and the linked code for every dependant.

Where family plans break

Four risks to resolve before applying

Bali is not the jurisdiction

Immigration, work and tax questions are Indonesian even when an agent sells a ‘Bali visa’.

Old names obscure new codes

Ask for the live official category instead of relying on B211A-era content or a generic KITAS label.

Family residence is not work permission

E31 status can join a qualifying family member; it should not be read as unrestricted local employment.

Proof obligations continue

Second Home, investor and other capital routes can carry maintenance, reporting and cancellation conditions after entry.

Document architecture

Prepare an evidence pack, not a pile of scans

Never legalise every document speculatively. Confirm what the exact route accepts, where it must be issued and how fresh it must be.

01

Identity

Passports with route-specific validity, photographs and any existing immigration records.

02

Relationships

Marriage, birth, adoption, custody or dependency evidence matching the legal family structure.

03

Principal eligibility

Employment, client, income, pension, investment, education or sponsor evidence for the exact category.

04

Admissibility

Police, health, insurance or clearance documents where the current route requests them.

05

Authentication

Apostille, consular legalisation, certified copy and translation requirements checked document by document.

Lower-risk sequence

From family plan to compliant arrival

  1. 01

    Write the activity map

For every adult and child, state the actual work, business, study or non-working activity and intended length of stay.

  2. 02

    Choose the principal anchor

Identify the route supported by a real job, overseas work, qualifying capital, school or family relationship.

  3. 03

    Build the dependant layer

Confirm eligible relationships, age limits, separate applications and what happens if the principal status ends.

  4. 04

    Prepare and authenticate

Work backwards from police, health, bank, employer and civil documents that may expire or need legalisation.

  5. 05

    Apply before locking the move

Coordinate school and temporary housing, retain written terms, and avoid irreversible payments ahead of the status evidence.

  6. 06

    Run the compliance calendar

Track entry, address reporting, renewals, re-entry, work or school changes, tax review and departure formalities.

Before paying an intermediary

Put these answers in writing

  • The current official category code and issuing-authority link for every family member.
  • The legal sponsor or guarantor and what happens if that person, employer or school changes.
  • The exact work, business, volunteering and study activities each status permits or prohibits.
  • Government fees separated from professional, translation, legalisation and third-party charges.
  • Entry, reporting, extension, renewal, re-entry and departure obligations with dates and owners.
  • The refund or remediation position if refused, delayed or moved to a different category.

Information, not individual immigration advice. Eligibility depends on current law and your evidence. Use the official sources below and a properly authorised professional where the route or activity needs one.

Straight answers

Questions about family relocation

Does one visa cover the whole family in Indonesia?

Not automatically. A principal route may allow dependant applications, but every person needs the correct application, relationship evidence and status. Map the principal, spouse and every child separately.

Does dependant status allow a spouse to work?

Never infer work permission from residence. Some routes prohibit it, some require a separate employment pass or permit, and some attach work rights only to particular principal categories. Obtain the answer for the exact code and activity in writing.

Can children attend international school on dependant status?

That depends on the route and country. Some children use dependant status; others need a student category or school sponsorship. Confirm the school's document process and the immigration authority's current requirement before accepting a place.

Is a long-validity visa the same as permanent residence?

No. A five-, ten- or twenty-year label may still be temporary, conditional, renewable or split into shorter grants. Read continuing criteria, cancellation triggers and whether the programme expressly leads to permanent residence.

Does visa approval settle our tax position?

No. Immigration, personal tax, employment law, social security and corporate presence use different tests. Days present, where work is performed, accommodation and remittances can matter independently of visa validity.

When should we pay school fees or sign a lease?

Only after the route, sponsor, dependant structure, permitted activities and refund exposure are understood. Keep early housing flexible and ask schools for written deferral or refund terms if status is not yet secured.

What visa do remote-working families use in Bali?

Indonesia's current official materials list E33G for a foreigner living in Indonesia while performing duties for an overseas company. The principal must verify current evidence, permitted activity and how each dependant applies in the live e-Visa portal.

Is B211A still the right visa name?

Do not start with a legacy nickname. Indonesia reorganised its classification, and current official materials use codes such as E30A, E31B/E31E and E33G. Require the current official code and page from any adviser.

What status does a child at school in Bali use?

The current index includes E30A for primary and secondary education. The school or qualifying guarantor should explain its document role; the child's status does not automatically give both parents work permission.

Can a spouse work on an E31 family visa?

Do not assume so. E31 categories support eligible family residence. Local employment or business activity must be matched to its own current permission before the spouse begins work.
