Living in Ubud with a family
Ubud is compelling for families who want its landscape, creative community and education culture. It is a poor substitute for island centrality: schools, major healthcare and the airport may all sit down slow, narrow roads.

The short answer
Is Ubud a good family base?
Ubud works when a specific educational and community model justifies the logistics. South Ubud/Mas can improve routes towards Denpasar; Sayan offers a greener west-side base with slope considerations; central and north Ubud prioritise lifestyle over southern school and hospital access. Note that Green School is in Sibang Kaja, south-west of Ubud—not in central Ubud.
The city-specific model
Ubud is a set of time rings
Every move away from the household's main anchor adds junction, slope and rain exposure; kilometres do not describe the week.
Daily village
Home, groceries, routine care and social life should work close together.
Named campus ring
Plot the actual gate—especially when the school brand is associated loosely with Ubud.
Denpasar route
Know local stabilisation and the road to appropriate emergency or specialist care.
Airport ring
Add rain, traffic and flight buffer rather than using the map estimate.
Neighbourhood search corridors
Start with the repeated week, not the famous district
These are research areas, not endorsements. Compare the exact school gate, care route, direction of travel and difficult local condition before booking viewings.
South Ubud / Mas
Fits: Families prioritising routes towards southern schools, Denpasar and the airport.
- Useful anchors
- Mas and southern Gianyar roads can avoid some central-Ubud crossings.
- Verify before choosing
- Map the exact school campus and receiving hospital; count junctions and compare heavy-rain access.
- Watch
- The Ubud label spans a large area, and construction or one narrow road can reshape travel.
Sayan / west
Fits: Green setting and a west-side community when school and work remain compatible.
- Useful anchors
- West-of-centre access towards some Badung/Gianyar corridors.
- Verify before choosing
- Research slope, retaining walls, river proximity, landslide history and cross-town school travel.
- Watch
- Valley views can carry drainage, access and emergency-response trade-offs.
Central / north Ubud
Fits: Town or northern-village life when the family is locally self-contained.
- Useful anchors
- Ubud services, culture and northern Gianyar communities.
- Verify before choosing
- Calculate the complete southern school, hospital and airport exposure before shortlisting homes.
- Watch
- A central lifestyle base can be the least central point for the child's repeated week.
International schools
Published fees establish a floor—not the family total
Ubud-area families must distinguish school branding from campus geography. Green School Bali is in Sibang Kaja, south-west of Ubud, and publishes 2026/27 annual tuition from IDR 185.445 million to IDR 328.601 million, plus application and registration charges.

Healthcare system
Connect routine care, emergency care and escalation
Routine
Choose a local clinic or paediatric provider for routine needs and confirm hours, diagnostics and medicines.
Emergency
Identify the closest appropriate stabilising facility and separately the Denpasar-area emergency department for likely serious scenarios.
Escalation
Road transfer time is part of the clinical plan. Complex treatment may require southern Bali, Jakarta or overseas, with insurer authorisation and a receiving hospital.
Daily movement
The route evidence that changes the answer
Narrow-road variance
One obstruction can change the route. Research at least two connections to school and care before viewings.
A driver does not remove time
Price transport but still protect the child's daily journey and adult pickup fallback.
Rain changes slopes
Official Bali disaster reporting documents landslides and closures around Ubud; investigate property-level exposure.

Turn the Ubud evidence into a shortlist from home
The page has already organised the school, care, movement and housing evidence. Use this checklist to capture the answers that matter, remove weak options and prepare for provider calls before planning any reconnaissance trip.
Research from home
Ubud family shortlist checklist
Test whether Ubud's education and community case survives the real school, hospital and road geography.
How to use it: read the section above first, then tick an item when you have captured the answer or evidence in your own move folder. The PDF is the offline quick-reference version.
1Locate the real campus
2Build the time-ring map
3Property evidence
Property due diligence
Inspect the home as family infrastructure
Mould envelope
Inspect wardrobes, roof spaces, bathrooms and air-conditioning; require a ventilation plan.
Slope and retaining walls
Seek professional evidence where relevant and inspect drainage above and below the property.
Insects and water
Check screens, standing water, tanks, treatment and reliable pressure.
Road and night access
Review lighting, width, turning, ambulance access and child pedestrian safety.
Elimination rules
When Ubud should leave the shortlist
- The chosen school lies across a repeated Ubud–Canggu or similarly fragile island route.
- A child's likely emergency or specialist needs cannot tolerate the transfer plan.
- The home has unresolved slope, retaining-wall, drainage or mould risk.
- The lifestyle case disappears after school and healthcare journeys are priced in.

Straight answers
Questions about living in Ubud with children
Should we choose a school or home first in Ubud?
Confirm that at least one school genuinely fits the child, its capacity and full fees first. Then shortlist homes inside a repeatable school, work and healthcare system.
How should we compare neighbourhoods before travelling?
Use the official and provider sources on this page to record school campus, hospital capability, difficult-weather exposure and repeated routes. Remove weak combinations from home, then carry only unresolved questions into calls or a later viewing trip.
Are published school fees the complete cost?
Usually not. Add application and registration charges, deposits, levies, transport, meals, uniforms, devices, trips, exams and learning support. Confirm refund and notice rules before paying.
Is the closest clinic a sufficient emergency plan?
No. Confirm a named emergency department, operating hours, paediatric capability, insurer or payment process, ambulance route and the transfer plan for care the city cannot provide.
Is Green School in Ubud?
No. Green School Bali's campus is in Sibang Kaja, Abiansemal, south-west of central Ubud. That distinction can completely change the viable housing area.
Can families live in Ubud and use a Canggu school?
It is generally a fragile daily design because narrow roads and congestion make journey times unreliable. Choose a closer home or a closer school.
What housing risks matter in Ubud?
Humidity, mould, insects, slope stability, retaining walls, drainage, water and narrow-road access deserve evidence at the exact property.
Is Ubud suitable for complex medical needs?
It may be unsuitable when frequent specialist or emergency access is likely. Confirm local stabilisation, receiving care, road transfer and insurer approval before moving.
