Entry is not residence
US citizens need a visa before travel—and the e-visa is still not a work route
Current State Department guidance says a US passport needs six months’ validity beyond arrival and sufficient blank pages. US citizens must obtain a visa before travel, except for a narrow Phu Quoc-only exception. Vietnam’s e-visa can support an eligible visit, but work and long-term family residence normally need the appropriate sponsor and immigration documents.
- 1
Apply through the official Vietnamese e-visa interface or the correct embassy/sponsored process; fake visa sites are a known problem.
- 2
Match every e-visa field to the passport exactly, print it and use the same passport for entry, stay and departure.
- 3
Complete the current air-arrival declaration no earlier than three days before arrival and retain its confirmation.
- 4
Do not plan to extend an e-visa inside Vietnam; current US guidance says it cannot be renewed or extended in country.
- 5
Confirm the principal work, investment or family route and the dependant residence basis before moving the household.
