Moving from Canada

Plan the Canadian side of your family move

Before the family lands in Southeast Asia, organise the Canadian systems that follow you or need a proper ending: CRA tax, savings, pensions, healthcare and property. These guides keep that admin connected to the life you are planning next.

The useful distinction

Canadian systems do not all end on moving day

The tax-residence date, provincial coverage end date, property completion, pension notification and first destination filing can all be different. Keep one family timeline, but confirm each date with the authority or provider responsible.

Common questions

Questions about moving overseas from Canada

What should a Canadian family do first when planning an overseas move?

Create one timeline for destination visas, tax residence, the Canadian home, registered accounts, pensions, provincial healthcare, schools and family records. It will show which decisions control the moving date.

Does leaving Canada automatically make us non-resident for tax?

No. The CRA looks at significant residential ties, the family's circumstances and any applicable treaty. Citizenship and a plane ticket do not decide the answer alone.

What is departure tax?

Canada can treat certain assets as sold at fair market value when residence ends. This deemed disposition may create a gain even without a cash sale, while registered plans and Canadian real property follow different rules.

Can we keep RRSPs and TFSAs?

Often yes, subject to provider restrictions. Non-resident RRSP withdrawals can face withholding, and non-resident TFSA contributions generally attract 1% tax per month. The destination may not recognise either account's Canadian tax treatment.

Can CPP and OAS be paid in Southeast Asia?

CPP can generally be paid abroad when the person qualifies. OAS usually requires 20 years of Canadian residence after age 18 for payment outside Canada, unless an international agreement or special rule helps.

Does provincial healthcare continue after a permanent move?

Provincial and territorial plans are residence-based and use different rules. A permanent move normally ends eligibility, so confirm the date and activate international cover without a gap.

Should we rent or sell our Canadian home?

Compare after-tax sale proceeds with conservative net rent, management, non-resident withholding, insurance, mortgage and return flexibility. The home's availability can also affect the tax-residency analysis.

How early should we start?

Six to twelve months is useful where the move includes property, investments, complex tax, pensions, health underwriting, school admissions, pets or a business.

Which currency would you like to see?

We can show SettleHappy planning figures in the currency that is most useful to you.

This changes approximate planning conversions and the representative origin used for journey and time-zone examples. Local prices and contracts stay in their original currency. You can change it in the header at any time.
