What happens to Australian super when you move overseas?

Most Australian citizens and permanent residents cannot cash out super simply because they move abroad. Temporary residents may have a DASP route, while SMSF members face a separate residency risk that needs attention before trustees relocate.

The short answer: Keep ordinary super in Australia unless a lawful condition of release or eligible transfer applies, and make sure the fund can service your genuine overseas address. If you are a former temporary resident, check DASP eligibility. If you run an SMSF, get specialist advice before the trustees or active members move because the fund's tax concessions can be at risk.

Start with your immigration status and the type of fund

Australian citizens and permanent residents generally remain subject to the normal preservation and condition-of-release rules. Moving permanently to Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia or the Philippines is not itself a condition of release, so super usually remains invested until retirement or another valid release condition is met.

Former temporary residents can be different. A departing Australia superannuation payment may be available after the person has left Australia and the relevant temporary visa has ceased. Australian and New Zealand citizens and Australian permanent residents are not eligible for DASP, and tax is withheld from the payment.

Make an ordinary fund usable from overseas

Ask the fund what an overseas residential address changes and how identity, withdrawals, beneficiary updates and complaints work from the destination. Download recent statements, the product disclosure statement, insurance terms and a contribution history before changing employment or losing an Australian phone number.

Super funds report through myGov and the ATO, but the fund itself still needs accurate details. Test authentication and recovery using an email and device the family controls. Never supply a false Australian address to keep a feature; ask for the provider's written overseas-member policy.

  • Confirm the fund name, USI, member number, balance and investment option.
  • Update personal email, phone, residential address and nominated bank details honestly.
  • Review binding and non-binding beneficiary nominations and their expiry rules.
  • Check whether death, total and permanent disability or income-protection cover continues overseas.

Treat insurance inside super as a separate decision

Life, disability and income-protection cover can be valuable, but definitions, work status, occupation, residence, travel and claim evidence matter. Stopping contributions, ending Australian employment or living abroad may affect eligibility or the practicality of a claim even when premiums continue to be deducted.

Ask the trustee or insurer about the exact destination, planned work and length of stay. Compare the insured amount with the family's debt, school costs, relocation plan and local cover. Do not cancel until replacement protection is accepted and active if the family still needs it.

Get SMSF residency advice before the trustees leave

An SMSF must remain an Australian superannuation fund to retain complying tax treatment. The ATO describes three residency conditions: establishment or an Australian asset, central management and control ordinarily in Australia, and the active-member test. Strategic decisions are normally made by the trustees, so moving every trustee overseas can create a serious problem.

A temporary absence of two years or less can be accepted for central management and control in some circumstances, but intention, extensions, active members and actual decision-making still matter. An enduring power of attorney and replacement trustee arrangements can affect SMSF status and should be designed with licensed legal and superannuation advice—not improvised after departure.

Worth knowing: SMSF non-compliance can be far more costly than ordinary administration. Arrange advice while the trustees can still execute documents and make a considered rollover or governance change in Australia.

Model contributions and destination tax together

Australian contribution caps and deduction rules can still matter, but an overseas employer will not normally operate Australian super guarantee in the same way. Before making voluntary contributions, confirm Australian eligibility, destination tax treatment, exchange costs and whether access remains suitable for the family's time horizon.

A destination may not recognise the Australian tax treatment of contributions, growth, pensions or lump sums. Keep statements that separate components and dates. Ask a cross-border adviser how retirement benefits, death benefits and any later return to Australia would be treated in both countries.

Put the work in a sensible order

  1. Before accepting the move

Identify every fund, immigration status, SMSF role and insurance dependency.

  2. Before leaving employment

Download plan records and compare keeping, consolidating and lawful rollover options.

  3. Before changing address

Test overseas access and get provider and insurer answers in writing.

  4. After arrival

Check statements and contributions, then review annually with destination tax and estate plans.

Common questions

Questions about superannuation

Can an Australian citizen withdraw super after moving overseas?

Not simply because of the move. Australian citizens and permanent residents generally need to meet the normal condition-of-release rules, such as reaching preservation age and retiring, rather than a departure condition.

Who can claim DASP?

It is generally for eligible former temporary residents who accumulated super in Australia, have left and no longer hold an active visa. Australian and New Zealand citizens and Australian permanent residents are excluded.

Is DASP tax-free?

No. The fund or ATO withholds DASP tax, with rates depending on the taxable components and whether working-holiday-maker rules apply. Check the current ATO calculation before deciding.

Can my super fund close my account because I live abroad?

Provider service policies and low-balance rules can affect accounts, but there is no single overseas-member rule for every fund. Give the fund your genuine address and ask what changes to access, investments and insurance.

Can an SMSF continue while all trustees live overseas?

It may fail the Australian superannuation fund residency conditions. Central management and control and the active-member test require careful analysis. Obtain specialist advice before the move.

Does the two-year SMSF absence rule make any move safe?

No. It concerns temporary central management and control in particular circumstances. Intention, actual decision-making, extensions and active-member rules still matter.

Should I consolidate super before leaving?

Only after comparing fees, investments, insurance, tax components and any employer or defined benefits. Consolidation can cancel valuable cover or features.

Will my destination tax Australian super?

Possibly. The destination may classify contributions, investment growth, pensions and lump sums differently from Australia. Get advice before drawing or restructuring benefits.
