Malaysia family relocation guide
Moving to Malaysia with children
Malaysia is one of Southeast Asia's most approachable choices for families, thanks to widespread English, strong private healthcare and a wide range of international schools. Before committing, compare the long-stay visas carefully: the right option depends on your finances, work plans and how long you hope to stay.
The honest answer
Is Malaysia a good place to move with children?
Malaysia is a strong practical fit for families who want English-friendly daily life and broad international-school choice. The deciding question is whether MM2H's capital/property structure or DE Rantau's shorter horizon matches your plan.
At a glance
What moving here could mean for your family
Costs are researched comparison ranges, not quotes. They assume a family of four with international school; a second high-fee place, major exchange-rate movement or premium housing can take you beyond them. Display conversions use ECB reference rates from 31 Aug 2026.
Where families live
Three places with different strengths
Start with the school, home and healthcare your family needs. Even a popular city may be a poor fit if everyday journeys are too difficult.
Kuala Lumpur
Best for: Maximum school, hospital and job choice
Modern, spread-out and highly neighbourhood-specific
Watch: School-run traffic, tolls and car dependence make location more important than a low rent far away.
Penang
Best for: Food, community and a smaller-city rhythm
Island/heritage mix with established family areas
Watch: Fewer school choices than KL and bridge/road bottlenecks; test journeys during term time.
Johor
Best for: Purpose-built schools and Singapore access
Lower-density developments with cross-border potential
Watch: Do not build a household budget around frictionless Singapore commuting; border time varies.
What matters here
MM2H categories require different levels of capital
The national programme's published tiers trade more capital for longer validity. Property purchase is compulsory after approval.
RM600k minimum property threshold; published fixed-deposit conditions also apply.
RM1m minimum property threshold; no general career/business permission.
RM2m minimum property threshold; published career/business permission distinguishes this tier.
Residence and work
Which visa could work for your family?
A valid visa does not always include permission to live, work or study in the way you expect. Check that the route covers what every family member plans to do.
| Route | Useful for | Family reality | Do not miss |
|---|---|---|---|
| MM2H Silver | Households seeking renewable five-year social-visit status | Eligible dependants can include spouse, children and parents/in-laws under published rules. | Requires a fixed deposit and, after approval, compulsory property purchase of at least RM600,000 under the national Silver category; it is not a PR route. |
| MM2H Gold / Platinum | Families with a longer horizon and greater capital | Published validity rises to 15 years for Gold and 20 years for Platinum. | Property thresholds rise to RM1 million and RM2 million respectively. Career/business permissions differ—only Platinum carries the published permission. |
| DE Rantau Nomad Pass | Eligible remote professionals and freelancers | Issued for up to 12 months and renewable for a maximum total of 24 months; eligible dependants can join. | A dependant spouse cannot work on dependant status. Current document rules include Malaysia-valid health insurance and tax-registration evidence. |
| Employment Pass + dependants | Employment with an eligible Malaysian sponsoring company | A qualifying pass can support dependant applications. | Work rights attach to the approved employer/role; dependant adults need their own authorisation to work. |
Before paying an agent: ask for the current official category code, sponsor, permitted activities, dependant basis, total government/agent fees, renewal conditions and cancellation consequences in writing.
Schools and children
Build the budget from the child's year group

Understanding the costs
What changes the monthly budget?
School fees and your choice of area usually affect the total more than groceries. These examples show how costs can vary; they are not fixed budgets.
Penang, Johor or outer KL; careful school selection; local food and a practical rather than premium home.
Well-located family housing, mid-range international school, car/ride-hailing and private medical insurance.
High-demand KL neighbourhood, top-tier tuition or boarding-related spend, larger home and frequent international leisure.
Keep deposits, visa fees, joining charges, flights, temporary housing, furniture and emergency reserves outside the monthly comparison. They arrive before the household reaches a steady rhythm.
Plan these early
Healthcare and cross-border tax
Healthcare
- Kuala Lumpur and Penang have broad private-hospital choice; Johor has established options, with Singapore sometimes considered for specialist care at a very different price point.
- Do not assume public or reciprocal cover from another country follows you to Malaysia. Insurance should match the hospitals you would actually use and include evacuation where your family needs it.
- Direct billing is convenient but not universal. Compare annual premium plus deductible, co-pay, outpatient spend and uncovered conditions—not just the premium.
Tax
- Malaysia's tax-residence rules use a 182-day test but also contain linked-period and other tests, so an arrival split across tax years needs more than a simple day count.
- Employment exercised in Malaysia is generally Malaysian-source even when an overseas entity pays the salary. A remote-work visa does not settle the tax position.
- A tax treaty with your departure country may relieve double taxation, but it does not choose the filing method or classify every pension, dividend or capital gain for you.

Is it right for you?
Who Malaysia may suit—and who should keep comparing
Put it on the shortlist if…
- You want English to work in most daily family situations.
- You value British-curriculum choice and private healthcare.
- You can organise life around a car or ride-hailing.
- Your visa plan fits either a shorter remote-work trial or significant long-stay capital.
Keep comparing if…
- You want a low-capital path to permanent residence.
- A dependant spouse expects automatic local work rights.
- You are unwilling to buy qualifying property under MM2H.
- Your housing search ignores peak-time school traffic.

Your next steps
How to turn research into a family move
Choose your time horizon
Separate a two-year experiment from a five-to-twenty-year residence plan. DE Rantau and MM2H solve different problems.
Check whether the required capital is affordable
Add up the fixed deposit, compulsory property, fees and transaction costs without assuming you can resell quickly or gain permanent residence.
Choose an area around school and healthcare
Visit at busy travel times, confirm waiting lists and ask what tuition excludes before choosing a neighbourhood.
Resolve work and tax separately
Check immigration permission, employer compliance, Malaysian source rules and residence in your departure country as connected but distinct questions.
Common questions
Questions about moving to Malaysia
Is Malaysia the best Southeast Asian country for families?
It is our highest-graded all-rounder because English, schools, healthcare and value combine unusually well. That does not make it universally best: visa capital, car dependence, climate and each parent's work rights can reverse the result.
Does MM2H lead to permanent residence or citizenship?
No. Malaysia's official MM2H FAQ says it does not lead to permanent residence or citizenship. Treat it as a renewable social-visit programme with category conditions, not an immigration-by-investment promise.
Must MM2H holders buy property?
Under the current national categories, property purchase after approval is compulsory. Published minimums are RM600,000 for Silver, RM1 million for Gold and RM2 million for Platinum; separate rules apply to the SEZ/SFZ category.
Can my spouse work on DE Rantau dependant status?
No. MDEC's official FAQ says a spouse on the dependant route cannot work. They would need their own appropriate permission.
How long can a family stay on DE Rantau?
The pass is issued for up to 12 months and can be renewed for another 12 months, giving a maximum published total of 24 months. It is useful for testing Malaysia but is not an indefinite family-settlement route.
How much should a family budget?
Use the live planning range shown above as a starting point. Premium Kuala Lumpur schools, registration fees, a second child, a larger home and frequent travel can take spending above it.
Can relocating families rely on free healthcare?
Do not assume public or reciprocal cover follows you. Private care is often a major strength, but insurance, exclusions and direct-billing arrangements need checking before arrival.
When do I become Malaysian tax resident?
The familiar 182-day rule is important, but Malaysia also has linked and alternative residence tests. Work physically performed in Malaysia can be Malaysian-source, so do not rely on an overseas payroll or visa label as the answer.
