Opening and using a bank account in Thailand

A Thai account can make rent, school fees and everyday QR payments easier, but families should not plan on approval by a particular bank or branch. Build a document pack around your real immigration status and reason for the account, then keep a separate way to pay while the application and mobile banking are completed.

The short answer

Can a foreign resident open an account in Thailand?

Foreign residents can be considered for Thai bank accounts, but the bank chooses which visa, status and supporting evidence it accepts for each product. Published bank examples commonly ask for a passport, a non-immigrant visa and evidence connected to the purpose of the stay. Approval, app access and card issue remain bank decisions.

Two decisions, not one

The rules may allow an account; the bank still decides

Keep these two stages separate. Passing the first does not promise the second.

01

Legal and product eligibility

Your identity, immigration status, age and the account type must fit the country's rules.

Sets the outer boundary
02

Bank customer checks

The bank verifies address, purpose, tax information, source of funds and expected activity under its own policy.

Can lead to more questions or a refusal
03

Usable account access

Card, app, local payments, transfer limits and recovery must all be activated and tested.

Opening is not the final step

Eligibility in practice

Start with your real status and reason for the account

These are planning patterns, not promises of approval. Ask the bank about the exact product using the same facts and documents you will present.

Usually the clearest case

Long-term resident or employee

A valid passport, appropriate non-immigrant status and work, residence or employer evidence commonly create a clearer purpose and address trail.

Possible at bank discretion

Student, parent or dependant

The bank may ask for the visa plus school, university, family, sponsor or residence evidence that explains the stay and expected account use.

Do not plan around approval

Visitor or short stay

A passport and entry permission alone may not satisfy a bank's product and risk policy. Keep cards and transfer alternatives that work without a Thai account.

A separate regulated category

Non-resident account

Thailand distinguishes non-resident baht and foreign-currency arrangements. Exchange-control permission does not mean every retail bank must offer you the product.

Document pack

Bring a consistent story, supported by originals

A long list does not help if the address, status, employer, tax details and source of money contradict one another.

01

Identity and status

  • Original passport with useful remaining validity
  • Current Thai visa, entry record and extension evidence
  • Work permit, school letter, dependant evidence or other proof of purpose
  • Previous passport or Thai customer record if details have changed
02

Address and contact

  • Lease and landlord or building confirmation
  • Utility, immigration residence record or other bank-accepted address proof
  • Thai mobile number registered in your own name where possible
  • Home-country address if the tax or account form requests it
03

Money and tax

  • Employment contract, payslips or other source-of-funds evidence
  • Statements showing where the opening transfer comes from
  • Tax-residence countries and tax identification numbers
  • Expected deposits, transfers, cash use and reason for the account

Before visiting a branch

  • Ask the bank which account is available for your exact visa and purpose before travelling to a branch.
  • Confirm whether the branch can complete foreign-customer onboarding and mobile-app activation.
  • Bring originals plus clear copies; the bank can request extra evidence or decline the application.
  • Do not use a false address, borrowed phone number or invented employment reason to pass onboarding.

Deposit protection

Know what the headline limit does—and does not—cover

Current headline maximumTHB 1 million

per depositor, per protected financial institution

The DPA says eligible baht deposits are protected automatically; customers do not register or pay a protection fee.

  • Accounts at the same institution are aggregated for the depositor.
  • The scheme is for eligible deposits in Thai baht, not every foreign-currency or investment product.
  • Confirm the institution is protected and the product is a deposit before placing a large balance.
  • The legal limit can change, so recheck the DPA rather than relying on a bank advert.

Local payment systems

Learn the names that appear at checkout

A payment logo tells you the rail; your bank or e-wallet still controls access, fees, limits and authentication.

Everyday transfers

PromptPay

PromptPay lets a participating bank account be linked to an identifier such as a Thai mobile number or other supported ID, so people can transfer without typing the account number each time.

Useful for
Splitting bills, paying a person, receiving local transfers
Check first
A mobile number cannot be linked to several accounts at once; confirm the recipient name before approving.
Shops and services

Thai QR Payment

Bank apps commonly scan merchant QR codes, and small businesses may prefer account-to-account payment. Access normally depends on an activated Thai bank app.

Useful for
Food, services, market stalls and bills
Check first
Check whether the QR is merchant-presented or a personal transfer and verify the displayed name and amount.
Rent and school fees

Bank transfer

Domestic transfers are central to larger household payments. Obtain beneficiary details from a verified invoice or known contact and save the receipt.

Useful for
Rent, deposits, school and household payments
Check first
Never accept changed bank details from an unverified message; call the known organisation first.

Cards, cash and secure access

Plan for the ordinary payment—and the day your phone fails

Debit and credit cards

A debit card may follow account approval; credit has separate income and underwriting rules. Check overseas use, online payments, contactless limits and replacement arrangements.

Cash and ATMs

Cash remains useful for small businesses and contingency. Compare your bank's ATM network and fees, count cash discreetly and avoid carrying the family's full reserve.

App and authentication

Expect a Thai number, device registration, PIN or biometric controls. Ask how to restore access after a lost phone and whether a branch visit is required.

Household resilience

Keep a second provider, an independently accessible card and enough emergency money for food, travel and a medical payment if one account is unavailable.

International transfers

Test what arrives before moving a large sum

Transfer fees, exchange spreads, intermediary deductions, bank checks and account currency all affect the useful amount.

  1. 01

    Confirm the receiving product

Check the account currency, SWIFT or domestic details, incoming-transfer fee and whether the bank needs a purpose or supporting evidence.

  2. 02

    Compare the amount delivered

Price the exchange-rate spread, sending fee, intermediary deductions and receiving fee—not only the headline transfer charge.

  3. 03

    Send a small test

Verify the beneficiary name and that the account receives and can use the money before sending school, rent or reserve funds.

  4. 04

    Keep the evidence

Save source statements, transfer confirmation, exchange record and the lease, school invoice or other reason for a large payment.

Tax-residency declarations

Answer the bank's question—not a simpler one

Thai banks implementing the Common Reporting Standard can ask for a self-certification covering tax residence, address and tax identification numbers. This is an account-reporting declaration, not a decision that you do or do not owe Thai tax. Answer from your actual circumstances and update the bank when residence or contact details change.

Have these answers ready

  • Which countries am I tax-resident in today?
  • What TIN or functional equivalent belongs to each country?
  • Does my address, phone or other evidence contradict the declaration?
  • Who should I notify when my tax residence changes?

Before arrival

Do the work that does not depend on a branch decision

1

Keep existing access alive

Tell home banks the truth about the move, preserve the registered number and test cards overseas.

2

Build one consistent file

Make names, dates, address, status, employment and source-of-funds evidence easy to reconcile.

3

Shortlist by function

Compare eligibility, app recovery, transfer controls, ATM access and protection—not a generic 'best bank' list.

4

Plan the first month without it

Keep enough accessible money and more than one card in case opening or activation takes longer than hoped.

Save these questions

Ask the same questions at every shortlisted bank

Comparable written answers are more useful than a general promise that opening should be easy.

  1. 01

Which account can you consider for my exact visa and purpose?

  2. 02

Which original documents and minimum validity periods do you require?

  3. 03

Can this branch complete foreign-customer onboarding and app activation?

  4. 04

Which phone number, device and biometric checks are needed?

  5. 05

How are incoming international transfers documented and charged?

  6. 06

Is this exact deposit product protected by the DPA?

  7. 07

How do I replace the phone, SIM or card without losing access?

  8. 08

What changes of address, passport, visa or tax residence must I report?

Common questions

Questions about bank accounts in Thailand

Can a foreigner open a bank account in Thailand?

Sometimes, but not as an automatic right. A bank must apply local rules and its own customer checks. Immigration status, purpose, address, source of funds, tax information and the product requested can all affect the decision. Requirements can also differ between banks and branches.

Can I open the account before I arrive?

Treat a fully usable account before arrival as the exception. Some banks offer an online start or international customer service, but identity checks, local contact details, biometric capture or branch activation may still be required. Keep your existing payment routes working until the new account and recovery process have been tested.

Does a visa guarantee that a bank will accept me?

No. A visa can help establish lawful status or purpose, but the bank still decides whether the customer and product fit its risk policy. Do not pay an agent who claims a particular visa guarantees approval.

Will a different branch give a different answer?

It can. Staff experience and internal escalation routes differ, but that does not make every refusal a mistake. Ask for the written product requirements, check whether an appointment or specialist branch is available and never alter facts to fit a branch's interpretation.

Do I need a local phone number?

It is commonly needed for alerts, one-time passwords, app registration and account recovery. Ask whether the bank accepts your chosen mobile network and what happens if the SIM, phone or number changes. Keep your original number active until every important service has been moved deliberately.

Should both adults have separate accounts?

Often yes, if both are eligible. Separate everyday access reduces the risk that one lost phone, frozen card or compliance review stops the household. Ask how joint accounts, additional cards, emergency contacts and deposit-protection aggregation work before relying on them.

Are e-wallet balances protected like bank deposits?

Do not assume so. A wallet, stored-value balance and bank deposit can sit under different legal arrangements. Identify the company holding the funds, the regulated product and whether the balance itself qualifies for the country's statutory deposit-protection scheme.

How often should I recheck this guide?

Check the regulator, protection scheme and shortlisted bank again before applying or moving a material balance. Bank onboarding and authentication procedures can change faster than general relocation guidance.

Can I use PromptPay without a Thai bank account?

PromptPay registration normally links an eligible identifier to an existing account at a participating provider. A visitor's foreign app may work with some cross-border QR arrangements, but that is not the same as having full Thai PromptPay access. Check the live app and merchant compatibility.

Are foreign-currency deposits protected in Thailand?

The DPA describes protected deposits as eligible deposits in Thai baht. Do not assume a foreign-currency account has the same statutory protection; ask the bank to identify the product and verify it against the DPA rules.
