Put the Australian departure side in a sensible order

A complete Australian moving-overseas checklist for families

Use this over several months rather than turning the final week into an admin emergency. Start with tax, super, health and home decisions; leave routine closures and address changes until the move is firm.

Last verified 2 September 2026

How to use this: tick a task when the answer or evidence is saved—not when someone has simply started it. Use the detailed Australian guides before making tax, super, healthcare or property decisions.

The checklist below keeps the major Australian departure actions together. Your ticks stay in this browser, and the PDF is designed for the family's offline move folder.

The final four weeks: notify with confirmed facts

  • Confirm visas, travel, accommodation, overseas health cover and the first appropriate hospital before cancelling essential arrangements.
  • Submit required ATO study-loan, Centrelink, Medicare or AEC actions using the current official route; keep confirmation.
  • Update banks, super funds, lenders, insurers, schools, healthcare providers and utilities with accurate effective dates.
  • Test myGov, myID, banking, super and insurer access without relying on a work email or soon-to-be-cancelled phone.
  • Save offline copies of entry approvals, policies, family records and first-week contacts on more than one device.
  • Photograph property condition, meters, serial numbers, luggage and high-value items before handover or travel.

First 90 days abroad: finish the departure

  1. Complete destination registrations

Address, immigration, tax, school, healthcare and driving steps have their own deadlines.

  2. Test the systems you kept

Log into banks, super, investments, insurance, myGov and property systems from the destination and fix weak recovery routes.

  3. Keep the evidence live

Track travel, workdays, Australian income, foreign tax, medical claims and property activity from day one.

  4. Calendar the first filing cycle

Australian, destination and any study-loan submissions may use different dates, income measures and exchange methods.

Common questions

Questions about departure checklist

When should an Australian family start the moving-overseas checklist?

Six to twelve months is useful where the move involves property, an SMSF, complex tax, school admissions, healthcare underwriting, pets or a business. Start with decisions and evidence before official closures.

Does checking an item save progress?

Yes. Ticks are stored only in the browser and device you are using; SettleHappy does not receive them. The downloadable PDF gives the family an offline copy.

Is there one Australian government departure form?

No. The ATO, Centrelink, Medicare, AEC and state or territory systems have different responsibilities. Use the checklist to identify which apply, then follow the current official process for each.

Should we tell the ATO before leaving?

Update contact details and complete specific obligations that apply, such as the study-loan overseas travel notification. Tax residency and the departure-year return still need separate analysis.

What should SMSF trustees do first?

Arrange specialist SMSF residency and governance advice before trustees or active members move. Do not rely on a general two-year absence idea without reviewing the actual fund and decision-making.

When should we cancel Medicare or private health arrangements?

First confirm the current Services Australia and fund rules and activate suitable overseas cover. Avoid an uninsured gap and save written effective dates for every family member.

Can we vote from overseas?

Eligible Australians intending to return within six years may use the overseas-elector process. People moving indefinitely use a different AEC notification. Timing and extension rules matter.

What belongs in hand luggage?

Passports, entry approvals, essential family certificates, lawful medicines and letters, insurance details, payment access and secure copies of first-week contacts should stay accessible.
