Moving from the United States

Plan the US side of your family move

A move to Southeast Asia has two rulebooks. This guide helps you organise the US one—federal and state tax, retirement accounts, healthcare, property and family admin—without losing sight of the life you are building next.

The important difference

Your US obligations and destination life run in parallel

Citizenship-based federal filing may continue, a state can have its own view of domicile, and the country you move to can tax residence and local activity. Plan the same dates, income, accounts and property across both systems.

Common questions

Questions about moving abroad from the United States

What is the first thing a US family should do before moving abroad?

Create one dated map of citizenship and green-card status, federal and state tax, employment, foreign accounts, healthcare end dates, schools, property and destination immigration. It exposes dependencies before irreversible bookings.

Do US citizens still file federal tax returns overseas?

Generally, yes. US citizens and resident aliens generally report worldwide income under the same federal filing rules while abroad, although exclusions, credits and treaties may change the tax due.

Does leaving the United States end state residency?

Not automatically. Each state has its own residence, domicile and source-income rules. Review the law and evidence for the state you are leaving.

Can we keep US bank, brokerage and retirement accounts?

Often some accounts can remain, but provider policies differ by destination and account type. Ask about overseas addresses, trading, deposits, authentication and distributions before relying on an account.

Will Medicare pay for healthcare in Southeast Asia?

Usually not. Medicare lists only limited foreign-care exceptions, and Part D does not cover prescriptions bought outside the United States. Plan separate overseas cover.

Should we sell our US home before moving?

There is no universal answer. Compare net sale proceeds with conservative rental cash flow, management, tax, insurance, mortgage and the timing of the main-home gain exclusion.

Can we still vote from overseas?

Eligible overseas citizens can generally vote using the state or territory where they last resided before departure. Use the Federal Voting Assistance Program for current registration and ballot steps.

How early should a family begin?

Six to twelve months gives useful room where the move involves property, school admissions, health underwriting, pets, a business or complex tax. Start even earlier if treatment or immigration evidence has long lead times.
