Driving licences and car setup in Thailand
A car can make family life easier in Bangkok's outer districts, Chiang Mai and Phuket, but the keys are the last step—not the first. Confirm that your licence and vehicle category are valid, the registration can be completed in your name and the insurer accepts every regular driver before paying for a car.

The short answer
What does a family need before driving in Thailand?
For a short stay, a valid foreign licence may need to be paired with a Thailand-recognised IDP; ASEAN licence arrangements can differ. Longer-term residents should plan for the Department of Land Transport route to a Thai licence. A car must have correct registration, annual tax and compulsory insurance, while voluntary cover is needed for broader family protection.
Foreign and local licence routes
Choose the route that matches your real stay
These are planning routes, not automatic entitlements. The authority makes the decision from the current rule and the documents you actually present.
Short visit
Check whether your issuing country, domestic licence language and IDP convention are accepted by the DLT, rental provider and insurer. Carry the original domestic licence with the IDP.
ASEAN licence
Do not rely on the ASEAN label alone. Confirm the licence class, validity, translation requirements and whether your residency or length of stay changes the answer.
Living in Thailand
Ask the DLT office serving your address what immigration and residence evidence, medical certificate, training and tests apply to your exact application.
International Driving Permit
Get the correct IDP before you travel
Thailand refers to the 1949 Geneva and 1968 Vienna road-traffic conventions, but the usable permit depends on the country that issued your licence. Only use your home country's authorised issuer.
- Carry the original domestic licence as well as the IDP.
- Match the vehicle category—especially for motorcycles.
- Check issue and expiry dates against the whole rental period.
- Ask the insurer to confirm acceptance in writing.
Local licence
Expect a local application, not an automatic exchange
DLT offices verify the applicant and may apply different steps according to the licence presented and the immigration record. Confirm the current checklist with the office that will process the application.
- 01
Confirm your status and office
Identify the DLT office for your Thai address and ask which visa, entry and residence evidence it accepts.
- 02
Prepare the document set
Commonly requested items include passport pages, address or residence evidence, a medical certificate, the valid foreign licence and a translation or IDP where required.
- 03
Complete training and checks
Allow for the current e-learning, colour, reaction, depth/peripheral vision or theory/practical requirements assigned to your route.
- 04
Check the licence issued
Verify the name, categories, restrictions and expiry before leaving the office; keep renewal dates with the family's visa calendar.
Documents to prepare
Build one consistent licence file
Names, dates, address, immigration status and vehicle category should agree across every document. Bring originals and check which copies or translations the authority wants.
Identity and residence
- Valid passport and relevant entry/visa pages
- Residence certificate, work-permit address evidence or other DLT-accepted proof
- Current contact details and appointment evidence
Driving history
- Original valid domestic licence
- Correct convention IDP or certified translation where required
- Driving record and no-claims letter if an insurer requests them
Application evidence
- DLT application and medical certificate in the accepted format
- Training or test confirmations
- Copies and originals requested by the processing office
Buying and registering a car
Finish the ownership chain before treating the car as yours
Foreign residents can appear in Thai vehicle-registration processes, but the exact identity and address evidence matters. Treat the original registration book, physical vehicle and seller's identity as one chain and complete the transfer at the DLT promptly.
Prove who owns it
Match the seller to the original vehicle registration book and check for finance, tax, legal or transfer restrictions.
Inspect the actual car
Check VIN/chassis and engine numbers, roadworthiness, service and crash history, tyres, flood evidence and child-seat anchorages.
Complete the DLT transfer
Confirm the passport, residence evidence, signed transfer papers, inspection and fees required from both parties before money changes hands.
Activate the family setup
Arrange compulsory and voluntary cover, annual tax, named drivers, child restraints, toll/payment access and breakdown support.
Used-car check
Do not let the paperwork and the vehicle tell different stories
- Original registration book details match the vehicle and seller
- Outstanding finance, tax and transfer restrictions cleared
- Independent mechanical and flood-damage inspection
- Correct registration transfer completed—not only signed forms
- Insurer accepts the vehicle, address, drivers and use before collection
- Every child restraint fits a usable rear belt or anchorage
Motor insurance
Separate the legal minimum from the protection you expect
Ask the insurer to explain the policy using one real accident: injury to another person, damage to their vehicle, damage to your car, a flooded engine and a driver using foreign documents.
Compulsory cover
Thailand's compulsory motor cover (often called Por Ror Bor) primarily addresses bodily injury under the motor-accident framework. Verify the current certificate and expiry.
Voluntary motor cover
Compare first-class/comprehensive and lower tiers for own damage, third-party property, theft, flood, named drivers, authorised repairs and excesses.
Claims support
Ask for the accident hotline, surveyor process, English-language help, towing, repair network and the documents to keep in the car.
Children in cars
Know the law; choose the safer family standard
Thai road-traffic law requires a child aged up to six to use a child safety seat, special seat or prescribed protective method. Passengers no taller than 135cm must use a belt or protective method, whichever row they occupy.
Use a recognised, size-appropriate child restraint installed according to both the seat and vehicle instructions. Do not interpret an exemption or broad 'protective method' as evidence that an adult belt alone fits a small child safely.
- Confirm age, height and seat stage for every child
- Inspect rear three-point belts and ISOFIX/top-tether points
- Check front-airbag and rear-facing-seat instructions
- Plan a compatible seat for taxis, rentals and the second car
Motorbikes and scooters
Legal to rent does not mean licensed, insured or family-safe
Rider and passenger helmet rules apply, and the driver needs the correct motorcycle category—not only a car licence.
Thailand's motorcycle crash burden is high. Young passengers have little physical protection, while rain, visibility and inconsistent helmet fit add risk.
Do not make a scooter the missing link in the school or nursery run. Use a car, school vehicle or other protected transport, particularly for children.
School transport
Verify the vehicle behind the school-bus promise
This guide checks the legal and safety setup. Our separate family-transport guide helps you compare the school run, journey time and everyday alternatives.
Ask who operates the vehicle
Request the school, contractor, DLT and insurance details for the actual bus or van—not only the route name.
Inspect restraint and supervision
Check usable belts or seats, adult supervision, driver checks, roster, GPS/communication and the final-child sweep.
Test the full school day
Get the pickup range, time on board, activity-bus arrangements, late return and flood or breakdown plan.
Before moving
Complete the research that travels well
You cannot finish local registration from abroad, but you can remove avoidable delays and plan safe transport for the weeks when the answer is still pending.
Obtain the authorised IDP
Confirm the convention and vehicle class before leaving the licence-issuing country.
Build the licence file
Bring originals, certified copies where useful, driving history and no-claims evidence; leave time for Thai residence and medical documents.
Price temporary transport
Budget for a driver, taxi or rental that can carry your child seats while the local licence and vehicle are arranged.
Shortlist rather than buy
Compare dealers, insurers and independent inspectors, but wait until registration and insurance eligibility are confirmed.
Save these questions
Ask the authority, seller and insurer the same precise questions
Written answers tied to your documents and the actual vehicle are more useful than a general promise that foreign families drive there all the time.
- 01
Which document combination lets me drive this vehicle class today?
- 02
What changes when my immigration status or length of stay changes?
- 03
Can the vehicle be registered in my name using the documents I hold?
- 04
What does the compulsory policy exclude?
- 05
Are every regular driver and school journey covered by the voluntary policy?
- 06
Can each child restraint be installed correctly in the exact car?
- 07
What accident, towing and translation support is available?
- 08
What renewal dates should sit beside our visas and annual vehicle tax?
Common questions
Questions about driving and car setup in Thailand
Does an International Driving Permit guarantee that I can drive in Thailand?
No. An IDP supports and translates the domestic licence that it was issued from. The destination must recognise the relevant convention, both documents must be valid, the vehicle category must match, and the insurer and any rental company must accept the arrangement. It is not a standalone licence.
Does a car licence let me ride a scooter or motorbike?
Not unless the underlying licence and any local licence or IDP include the correct motorcycle category. A rental company handing over a scooter does not prove that you are licensed or insured.
Can I buy a car before I have a local driving licence?
Ownership, registration, finance, insurance and permission to drive are separate questions. It may be possible to own a vehicle before you can lawfully drive it, but do not pay until the registration authority, insurer and any finance provider confirm the exact route for your identity and immigration status.
Is compulsory motor insurance enough for a family car?
Usually not. Compulsory cover is commonly designed around minimum third-party injury or liability protection. Ask what it excludes, then compare voluntary comprehensive cover, named-driver rules, flood and theft protection, repairs, roadside help, child-seat replacement and claims support.
What should we arrange before moving?
Check the correct IDP with the authorised issuer in the licence country; obtain a current driving record if useful; scan licences and no-claims evidence; ask insurers for written eligibility; shortlist child seats that fit locally sold vehicles; and budget for safe temporary transport while local documents are completed.
Can I convert my foreign licence to a Thai licence without a test?
Do not assume so. The DLT route and checks depend on the licence, supporting documents and office assessment. Applicants may need training and physical checks, and a theory or practical test can apply. Ask the processing DLT office for its current checklist.
Can a foreign resident register a car in Thailand?
Foreign residents can be part of Thai registration processes, but the DLT will require acceptable identity and address evidence. Confirm the exact documents before paying a deposit, and complete the transfer against the original registration book and physical vehicle.
Are child car seats compulsory in Thailand?
The law requires children aged up to six to use a child safety seat, special seat or prescribed protective method, and passengers no taller than 135cm need a belt or protective method. Use a correctly fitted child restraint suited to the child's size even where the legal wording permits another method.
