Put the Canadian departure side in a sensible order

A complete Canadian moving-abroad checklist for families

Use this over several months rather than turning the final week into an admin emergency. Start with tax residence, savings, pensions, health and home decisions; leave routine notices and closures until the move is firm.

How to use this: tick a task when the answer or evidence is saved—not when someone has simply started it. Use the detailed Canadian guides before making tax, investment, pension, healthcare or property decisions.

The checklist below keeps the major Canadian departure actions together. Your ticks stay in this browser, and the PDF is designed for the family's offline move folder.

The final four weeks: notify with confirmed facts

  • Confirm visas, travel, accommodation, overseas health cover and the first suitable hospital before ending essential protection.
  • Submit applicable CRA, Service Canada and provincial actions through the current official route; keep confirmation.
  • Update banks, investment and pension providers, lenders, insurers, schools, healthcare providers and utilities with accurate dates.
  • Test CRA, Service Canada, banking, investment and insurer access without relying on a work email or soon-to-be-cancelled phone.
  • Save offline copies of entry approvals, policies, family records and first-week contacts on more than one device.
  • Photograph property condition, meters, serial numbers, luggage and high-value items before handover or travel.

First 90 days abroad: finish the departure

  1. Complete destination registrations

Address, immigration, tax, school, healthcare and driving steps have their own deadlines.

  2. Test the Canadian systems you kept

Log into banks, investments, pensions, insurance and property systems from the destination and fix weak recovery routes.

  3. Keep the evidence live

Track travel, workdays, Canadian income, foreign tax, withholding, medical claims and property activity from day one.

  4. Calendar the first filing cycle

Canadian and destination returns may use different dates, income measures and exchange methods.

Common questions

Questions about departure checklist

When should a Canadian family start the moving-abroad checklist?

Six to twelve months is useful where the move involves property, investments, departure tax, pensions, health underwriting, school admissions, pets or a business. Start with evidence and decisions before official closures.

Does checking an item save progress?

Yes. Ticks are stored only in the browser and device you are using; SettleHappy does not receive them. The downloadable PDF gives the family an offline copy.

Is there one Canadian government departure form?

No. CRA, Service Canada, provincial healthcare, property and other systems have separate responsibilities. Form NR73 is not a universal compulsory departure form.

Which CRA forms might apply?

The departure return includes the emigration date. Forms T1243, T1161 and T1244 can apply to deemed dispositions, property lists and tax deferral, while continuing Canadian income can create other returns or elections.

Should we close RRSPs and TFSAs?

Not automatically. First confirm provider access and destination tax. Stop non-resident TFSA contributions, and model withholding and local tax before withdrawing registered funds.

When should provincial healthcare be cancelled?

Tell the plan the genuine departure circumstances and get the final eligibility date. Activate suitable overseas cover before that date so the family is never uninsured.

What should we do about CPP and OAS?

Download CPP or QPP contribution records, build the OAS residence history and notify Service Canada about a long absence or move. Check payment abroad, social security agreements and tax separately.

What belongs in hand luggage?

Passports, entry approvals, essential civil and custody records, lawful medicines and letters, insurance details, two payment routes and secure copies of first-week contacts should stay accessible.
