Put the departure side in a sensible order

A complete US moving-abroad checklist for families

Use this over several months rather than turning the final week into an admin emergency. Start with tax, healthcare and home decisions; leave routine address changes until the move is firm.

Last verified 1 September 2026

How to use this: tick a task only when the answer or evidence is saved—not when someone has merely started it. Use the detailed guides for tax, state domicile, retirement, healthcare and property before making the large decisions.

The checklist below keeps the major US departure actions together. Your ticks stay in this browser, and the downloadable PDF is designed for the family's offline move folder.

Six to twelve months before: find the decisions that control timing

Tax and work

Map citizenship, state domicile, work location, business interests, foreign accounts and the likely first-year filing position.

Family continuity

Confirm destination immigration, school admissions, health underwriting, medicine and any care that cannot tolerate a gap.

Home and money

Compare sale and rental evidence, check provider overseas policies and protect access independent of an employer or US phone.

The final four weeks: notify with confirmed facts

  • Confirm visas, travel, accommodation, insurance and the first appropriate hospital before cancelling essential arrangements.
  • Update employers, schools, healthcare providers, lenders, insurers, banks and account providers through verified channels.
  • Update IRS and state contact details using current official methods; keep reliable access to important US mail.
  • Use FVAP for overseas voter registration and ballot steps; do not assume ordinary local registration covers an overseas voter.
  • Save offline copies of entry approvals, policies, records and first-week contacts on more than one device.
  • Photograph property condition, meters, serial numbers, luggage and high-value items before handover or travel.

First 90 days abroad: finish the departure

  1. Complete destination registrations

Address, immigration, tax, school, healthcare and driving steps have their own deadlines.

  2. Test the systems you kept

Log into banks, brokers, retirement plans, insurance and government accounts from the destination and fix weak recovery routes.

  3. Keep the evidence live

Track travel, workdays, account maximums, foreign tax, medical claims and property income from day one.

  4. Calendar the first filing cycle

Federal return, FBAR, Form 8938, state return and destination tax may use different dates and extensions.

Common questions

Questions about departure checklist

When should a US family start the moving-abroad checklist?

Six to twelve months is useful where the move involves a home, school admissions, healthcare underwriting, pets, a business or complex tax. Start with decisions and evidence before address changes.

Does checking an item save progress?

Yes. Ticks are stored only in the browser and device you are using; SettleHappy does not receive them. The downloadable PDF gives the family an offline copy.

Should we notify the IRS before leaving?

There is no single citizen departure form equivalent to ending federal filing. Update your address when appropriate and plan the departure-year return, extensions and international reporting that apply.

How do we tell the IRS our new address?

You can use Form 8822 for an individual address change, use the appropriate address on a return or follow another current IRS method. Address changes can take time, so retain confirmation and secure mail handling.

Can we redirect mail internationally with USPS?

USPS change-of-address options and forwarding limits vary. Use the current official service and also update important organisations directly; do not rely on forwarding for tax, court or time-sensitive notices.

Can children vote from overseas when they become eligible?

FVAP explains state-specific rules, including for some US citizens born overseas who have never lived in the United States. Eligibility depends on the relevant state law.

Do we need an international driving permit?

It depends on the destination, licence and length of stay. An IDP translates licence information and does not replace a valid licence. Check destination and state issuing requirements before travel.

What should stay in hand luggage?

Passports, entry approvals, family certificates, essential medicine and letters, insurance details, payment access and secure copies of first-week contacts should remain accessible.
