Bali family relocation guide

Moving to Bali, Indonesia with children

Bali's appeal for families is real: it offers welcoming communities, outdoor living and distinctive schools. It is also part of Indonesia, so a successful move starts with a lawful Indonesian visa, a practical wet-season plan and dependable access to healthcare—not simply a beautiful villa.

The honest answer

Is Bali a good place to move with children?

Bali is the lifestyle specialist of the five. It can be exceptional for flexible, internationally minded families, but it asks for more due diligence on immigration categories, traffic, healthcare escalation, land claims and fast-rising costs in popular areas.

At a glance

What moving here could mean for your family

Planning range£3,100–£5,500 a monthFamily of four, including international school
EnglishModerate to high in expat/tourist hubs; Indonesian remains important for wider daily life
Best forCommunity-led island life, outdoor learning and flexible remote households
Main challengeTraffic, wet-season disruption, specialist healthcare and exact visa/work permissions

Costs are researched comparison ranges, not quotes. They assume a family of four with international school; a second high-fee place, major exchange-rate movement or premium housing can take you beyond them. Display conversions use ECB reference rates from 31 Aug 2026.

Where families live

Three places with different strengths

Start with the school, home and healthcare your family needs. Even a popular city may be a poor fit if everyday journeys are too difficult.

01

Sanur

Best for: A calmer family base and practical access

Established, walkable in parts and less nightlife-led

Watch: School choice is still route-dependent; beach-side and bypass traffic create very different daily experiences.

02

Ubud

Best for: Nature, wellness and alternative education

Green, cultural and community-oriented

Watch: Road congestion, humidity, mould and distance from major hospitals matter more than the idyllic photos suggest.

03

Canggu area

Best for: Large international network and lifestyle businesses

Social, fast-changing and highly commercial

Watch: Congestion, construction and housing inflation are major family costs; choose school and micro-area first.

What matters here

Keep school, home and work close together in Bali

A manageable week depends on short, reliable everyday journeys. Moving one part of the plan can change the whole family experience.

A place on paper is not useful if the journey becomes unmanageable in heavy rain.

Visit in daylight and rain; test mould, drainage, water, noise and internet.

Residence and work

Which visa could work for your family?

A valid visa does not always include permission to live, work or study in the way you expect. Check that the route covers what every family member plans to do.

E30A student residencePrimary or secondary education at an eligible institutionThe official index lists a dedicated primary/secondary student category.A child's student permission does not itself grant parents work rights; parent/dependant routes must be confirmed.
E31 family categoriesEligible spouse or child of an Indonesian limited/permanent-stay holderE31B and E31E are listed for spouse and child relationships to qualifying holders. The sponsor's status and relationship documents control eligibility; family status is not automatically work authorisation.

Schools and children

Build the budget from the child's year group

Our comparison range is about £9,500–£14,000 a year. Published tuition is only the start: application, registration, capital/development, deposit, bus, meals, uniform, devices, exams, trips and learning support may be separate.

Understanding the costs

What changes the monthly budget?

School fees and your choice of area usually affect the total more than groceries. These examples show how costs can vary; they are not fixed budgets.

Value-ledAround £3,100–£3,800/mo

Less-hyped area, modest villa/home, careful school choice and limited imported-goods habits.

ComfortableAround £3,800–£4,600/mo

Reliable family housing near school, private insurance, driver/scooter mix and regular international spending.

PremiumAround £4,600–£5,500+/mo

Canggu/Ubud demand premium, high-fee school, larger serviced villa, frequent transport and overseas care/travel buffer.

FIRST-YEAR RULE

Keep deposits, visa fees, joining charges, flights, temporary housing, furniture and emergency reserves outside the monthly comparison. They arrive before the household reaches a steady rhythm.

Plan these early

Healthcare and cross-border tax

Healthcare

  • Bali has private hospitals and clinics, but complex paediatric, trauma or specialist care can require transfer to Jakarta, Singapore or elsewhere. Insurance must contemplate that journey.
  • Road safety and ambulance response are practical health issues. Map the route and after-hours capability of the facility you would use, not simply the closest clinic pin.
  • Humidity, mould, dengue and wet-season flooding are household factors. Inspect drainage, ventilation, water and access during rain before committing to a long lease.

Tax

  • Indonesia can treat an individual as a domestic tax subject if they reside there, are present for more than 183 days in any 12-month period, or show an intention to reside.
  • That is not the same as 183 days in a calendar year. Immigration validity and tax residence are separate, while remotely performed services can create additional questions.
  • A tax treaty with your departure country may relieve double taxation, but banking, payroll, company ownership and remittance facts need coordinated advice.

Is it right for you?

Who Bali may suit—and who should keep comparing

Put it on the shortlist if…

  • You prioritise lifestyle, community and distinctive education.
  • Your work and schooling can fit a verified current visa route.
  • You can keep school, home and work fairly close together.
  • You will fund robust insurance and keep money aside for overseas care.

Keep comparing if…

  • You need an easy direct long-haul route home or predictable road journeys.
  • Your plan relies on casual local work without checking permission.
  • You need easy access to deep paediatric subspecialties.
  • You assume a foreigner can simply buy freehold land or that a nominee removes the risk.

Your next steps

How to turn research into a family move

  1. Choose the school before the area

Bali traffic makes the journeys between school, home and work central to the decision. Check them in rain and at school opening and closing times.

  2. Verify the current visa code

Use the official immigration index and e-Visa portal. Make an adviser explain the code, sponsor, permitted activity, dependants and cancellation risk in writing.

  3. Check how the home works day to day

Check drainage, mould, backup internet, water, road access, construction noise and safe transport for children—not just the interiors.

  4. Plan for specialist healthcare

Choose an insurer, a Bali provider and an overseas hospital before an emergency. Keep enough available cash or credit for deposits and evacuation.

Common questions

Questions about moving to Bali

Is Bali a country?

No. Bali is a province of Indonesia. Immigration, tax, land and national law are Indonesian, even when local customs and the island's economy create a distinct daily experience.

What visa do remote workers use in Bali in 2026?

Indonesia's official visa index lists E33G as a remote-worker limited-stay category. At our 26 August 2026 check, its official detail page did not publish requirements, so verify the live e-Visa portal and get the exact permitted activity in writing rather than copying old agency criteria.

Is the B211A still the visa I should ask for?

Do not begin with old blog terminology. Indonesia reorganised visa classifications, and the current official index uses codes such as E30, E31 and E33 for relevant residence categories. Ask any adviser to identify the live official code and source.

Can a foreigner buy a villa or land in Bali?

Foreigners cannot simply own Indonesian freehold land. Other structured rights may exist for qualifying people or entities, but nominee ownership can create serious loss and enforceability risks. Use an independent Indonesian lawyer before paying anything.

Which part of Bali is best for families?

Sanur often suits calmer, practical family life; Ubud suits nature and alternative education; the Canggu area has the largest international community. The best choice is the one where school, home and healthcare remain manageable in real traffic.

How much should a family budget?

Use the live planning range shown above as a comparison. Canggu housing, larger villas, a second child, transport, imported goods and premium schools can push beyond it.

Is Bali healthcare good enough for children?

Routine private care is available, but families should plan for the possibility that complex paediatric or specialist treatment requires transfer off-island. Insurance limits, evacuation authorisation and the destination hospital matter.

When might I become Indonesian tax resident?

Indonesia's tests include residence, more than 183 days in any 12-month period, or an intention to reside. That rolling period differs from a simple calendar-year count. Take advice before remote work or long stays.
