Written end date from the health insurer
The short answer: If the family gives up its German home, complete the local Abmeldung and keep the certificate. Separately, confirm whether any dwelling remains available for German tax purposes, obtain the health insurer's written end date, tell Deutsche Rentenversicherung and benefit offices where relevant, and get non-resident instructions for property, banking and investments.
Deregister the address—and keep the certificate
If you move out of a German dwelling and do not move into another dwelling in Germany, you must deregister with the responsible registration authority. The local process, appointment route and timing can differ by municipality, so use the official service for the registered address rather than a generic relocation blog.
Ask for an Abmeldebestätigung and save it. Insurers, banks, consulates, tax authorities and overseas services may request proof later. Deregistration updates the population register; it does not automatically cancel every contract, benefit, tax duty or health-insurance membership.
- Check the local Bürgeramt or municipal portal for timing and whether each family member must attend.
- Use the genuine overseas address where the form requests one.
- Keep the certificate with passports, visas and housing evidence.
- Contact schools, childcare, vehicle, broadcasting-fee and benefit offices through their own routes.
A German home can keep the tax question open
German unlimited income-tax liability generally applies when someone has a residence or habitual abode in Germany. Under the official guidance for section 8 of the Fiscal Code, a dwelling can remain a German residence if it is kept in circumstances showing that the person intends to retain and use it. Simply registering an overseas address or spending most of the year abroad does not settle that factual question.
A home genuinely left only for asset management—for example, because it is being sold or let long-term and that plan is carried out—can point differently from a furnished home kept available for visits. Discuss the exact access, family use, rental terms, work and move dates with a German tax adviser, then check the double-tax treaty with the destination if domestic residence overlaps.
Worth knowing: Abmeldung is important evidence, but it is not a tax-residence certificate. The tax authority applies tax law to the actual living and economic arrangements.
Plan the departure return and continuing German income
Tell the responsible Finanzamt about the overseas address and ask how the departure-year return should be filed. German-source income—such as rent from German property, work physically carried out in Germany or certain pension and business income—can remain taxable after unlimited liability ends.
Germany's double-tax agreements allocate taxing rights and relief by income type. If an adult owns or manages a company, takes a large shareholding abroad or continues to work for a German employer, obtain specialist advice on exit taxation, payroll, social security and corporate presence before the work location changes.
Get a written health-insurance handoff
Contact the statutory Krankenkasse or private insurer directly with the departure date, destination and future work status. German cover, voluntary membership, long-term care insurance and family co-insurance can react differently, and proof of overseas cover or deregistration may be requested.
The German EHIC is designed for eligible temporary care in the European coordination area, not permanent care in Southeast Asia. Put replacement insurance in force before German cover ends and check inpatient access, direct billing, chronic conditions, maternity, mental health and medical evacuation for every family member.
- Ask the insurer to confirm the final covered day in writing.
- Do not cancel a policy until replacement cover is accepted and active.
- Collect Befundberichte, vaccination records, prescriptions and named medicine details.
- Tell the insurer if employment continues with a German employer; posting rules need separate assessment.
Keep the German pension record alive
Deutsche Rentenversicherung pays German pensions abroad in many cases, but the amount and entitlement can change for certain credited periods, disability pensions or countries. It advises pension recipients to report an overseas move early so payment and address details can be updated without interruption.
Request a current Versicherungsverlauf and correct missing employment, childcare or credited periods. If already receiving a pension, ask about bank details, currency costs, taxation and annual life certificates. Separately check occupational pensions, Riester or Rürup arrangements and investment providers for non-resident service and tax reporting.
Close contracts without losing access
Build a provider list for rent or mortgage, utilities, broadcasting contribution, mobile service, vehicle registration, insurance, banking and investments. Give notice under each contract's rules and keep final readings, handover documents, balances and confirmations.
Retain a secure way to receive official mail and use German online accounts. Check whether the mobile number used for two-factor authentication will work abroad, and update it before surrendering the SIM. For civil, school and medical records, ask the Southeast Asian recipient whether originals need an apostille, legalisation or certified translation.
What Abmeldung does—and what it does not do
Treat the certificate as one important record, then finish the separate conversations it cannot complete for you.
| Area | What Abmeldung helps show | What still needs a direct answer |
|---|---|---|
| Population register | That the German dwelling was given up | Local procedure and certificate for every family member |
| Tax | Evidence supporting the move date | Residence, treaty, return and German-source income |
| Health insurance | Evidence an insurer may request | Final coverage, contributions and replacement policy |
| Pensions and benefits | A new address for records | Payment abroad, eligibility and life certificates |
| Property and contracts | Possible special-cancellation evidence | Notice, tax, lender, insurer and handover terms |
| Destination admin | Useful proof of previous residence | Visa, translations and authentication requirements |
