Opening and using a bank account in Indonesia

In Indonesia—including Bali—a local account and app can simplify rent, school, payroll and QRIS payments. Eligibility still depends on the customer's real status and the bank's checks. Prepare residence, address, tax and source-of-funds evidence, and keep international cards and an emergency reserve until local access is reliable.

The short answer

Can a foreign resident open an account in Indonesia?

Foreign nationals can be considered for Indonesian accounts, but the required documents and products vary. Residence permits such as KITAS or KITAP commonly make the application clearer; published regulation and bank policies may allow other evidence in specified cases. A passport alone should never be treated as guaranteed approval.

Two decisions, not one

The rules may allow an account; the bank still decides

Keep these two stages separate. Passing the first does not promise the second.

01

Legal and product eligibility

Your identity, immigration status, age and the account type must fit the country's rules.

Sets the outer boundary
02

Bank customer checks

The bank verifies address, purpose, tax information, source of funds and expected activity under its own policy.

Can lead to more questions or a refusal
03

Usable account access

Card, app, local payments, transfer limits and recovery must all be activated and tested.

Opening is not the final step

Eligibility in practice

Start with your real status and reason for the account

These are planning patterns, not promises of approval. Ask the bank about the exact product using the same facts and documents you will present.

Usually the clearest route

KITAS or KITAP holder

A passport, residence permit, local address, tax details and employment, business or family purpose provide a stronger onboarding file.

Purpose must match the records

Worker or business owner

Bring employer or company evidence and be ready to explain expected salary, business receipts and international transfers. Account opening does not authorise work.

Possible at bank discretion

Dependant or family resident

Family status, sponsor, address and source-of-funds evidence may be needed where the applicant has no local employment income.

Products can be restricted

Visitor or non-resident

OJK material has described simplified foreign-customer cases using a passport plus specified additional evidence, but the bank still determines product availability and acceptance.

Document pack

Bring a consistent story, supported by originals

A long list does not help if the address, status, employer, tax details and source of money contradict one another.

01

Identity and immigration

  • Original passport with sufficient validity
  • KITAS, KITAP, visa or other status accepted for the product
  • Entry and prior Indonesian banking records if relevant
  • Specimen signature, photo or biometric checks required by the bank
02

Address and purpose

  • Local address evidence or residence certificate accepted by the bank
  • Employment letter, company documents, school or family sponsorship evidence
  • Indonesian mobile number and reliable email
  • NPWP or explanation of tax-number position where the form requires it
03

Funds and reporting

  • Employment, business, pension or savings source evidence
  • Statements for the opening deposit and larger incoming transfers
  • Tax-residence and TIN self-certification
  • Expected account use, counterparties and currencies

Before visiting a branch

  • Ask for the foreign-customer requirements for the exact branch, product and status.
  • Confirm whether app registration requires an Indonesian number, in-person device activation or local ID data.
  • Check minimum balance, dormancy, card, ATM and international-transfer fees before funding.
  • Never use a nominee account or let an agent invent an address, job or tax number.

Deposit protection

Know what the headline limit does—and does not—cover

Current headline maximumIDR2 billion

per depositor, per bank

LPS protects eligible deposits at participating Indonesian banks up to the statutory limit, subject to the scheme's conditions.

  • LPS describes the eligibility test through the '3T' conditions: the deposit is recorded by the bank, interest does not exceed the current guarantee rate and the depositor has not harmed the bank.
  • The guarantee interest rate changes periodically; check the live LPS rate before accepting a high-return deposit.
  • Balances across accounts at the same bank are combined for the depositor.
  • Not every investment, wallet or overseas-booked balance is a protected deposit.

Local payment systems

Learn the names that appear at checkout

A payment logo tells you the rail; your bank or e-wallet still controls access, fees, limits and authentication.

Indonesia's QR standard

QRIS

Bank Indonesia requires QR payment providers to use QRIS, allowing one merchant code to work with participating payment applications and funding sources.

Useful for
Shops, restaurants, services and small merchants
Check first
Use a licensed provider, verify the merchant and amount, and remember that a transfer or wallet payment may not have card-style chargeback rights.
Real-time bank transfer

BI-FAST

BI-FAST supports real-time, round-the-clock fund transfers through participating bank channels. Availability, limits and customer fees depend on the provider.

Useful for
Domestic transfers, bills and household payments
Check first
Check the beneficiary name and account; never trust replacement payment details sent through a compromised chat or email.
Retail and transport

Cards and e-money

Debit cards, domestic rails and regulated e-money products fill different roles. Check where each works, how it is topped up and who legally holds the balance.

Useful for
ATMs, larger retailers, transport and smaller-value payments
Check first
Deposit insurance does not automatically extend from a bank account to every linked wallet balance.

Cards, cash and secure access

Plan for the ordinary payment—and the day your phone fails

Debit and credit cards

A local debit card may follow account approval. Credit requires separate underwriting and income evidence. Check online, overseas, contactless and supplementary-card features.

Cash and ATMs

Cash remains practical, especially outside major centres. Learn the bank's ATM network, withdrawal limits and replacement process, and keep emergency cash in more than one place.

App and device security

Expect a registered phone, OTP, PIN, biometric or device binding. Ask exactly how access is restored when a phone is lost or an Indonesian SIM expires.

Fraud and impersonation

Ignore messages requesting an OTP, PIN or remote screen access. Use the number on the bank's own site or card and lock the account or card promptly if access is compromised.

International transfers

Test what arrives before moving a large sum

Transfer fees, exchange spreads, intermediary deductions, bank checks and account currency all affect the useful amount.

  1. 01

Match the account to the transfer

Confirm rupiah or foreign-currency receipt, beneficiary fields, SWIFT details and the bank's documentation for incoming funds.

  2. 02

    Compare the whole conversion

Include the exchange spread, sender fee, intermediary deduction, receiving fee and any later conversion into rupiah.

  3. 03

    Send and verify a test

Confirm the credited amount and access before transferring a property deposit, school payment or substantial family reserve.

  4. 04

    Retain the source and purpose

Keep contracts, invoices, payslips, sale documents, sending statements and transfer receipts together.

Tax-residency declarations

Answer the bank's question—not a simpler one

Indonesian financial institutions can collect tax-residence and TIN information for customer due diligence and international tax-reporting obligations. Complete the bank's self-certification from the facts, including every jurisdiction requested. An NPWP or overseas TIN field does not by itself settle Indonesian tax residence or liability.

Have these answers ready

  • Which jurisdictions treat me as tax-resident now?
  • Do I have an Indonesian NPWP, and what should be stated if I do not?
  • Which overseas TINs and addresses must be declared?
  • How do I update the bank when status, address or residence changes?

Before arrival

Do the work that does not depend on a branch decision

1

Map status to products

Ask banks what they offer for your exact KITAS, KITAP, work, family or other status before choosing around an account promise.

2

Keep several payment routes

Bring more than one overseas card and maintain the registered phone and reserve until QRIS, card and app access work.

3

Prepare translated context

Make employment, company, family, address and money-source documents easy for the bank to understand and reconcile.

4

Check LPS, not the rate alone

Record the current LPS guarantee rate and confirm the product and bank before placing savings.

Save these questions

Ask the same questions at every shortlisted bank

Comparable written answers are more useful than a general promise that opening should be easy.

  1. 01

Which account can you consider for my exact immigration status?

  2. 02

Which passport, permit, address and tax documents are required?

  3. 03

Can this branch activate the card, app and QRIS access?

  4. 04

What minimum balance, dormancy and transaction fees apply?

  5. 05

Can I receive salary and international transfers into this account?

  6. 06

Is this product and rate eligible under LPS's current rules?

  7. 07

How do I restore access after losing the device or number?

  8. 08

What changes of permit, address, passport or tax residence must I report?

Common questions

Questions about bank accounts in Indonesia

Can a foreigner open a bank account in Indonesia?

Sometimes, but not as an automatic right. A bank must apply local rules and its own customer checks. Immigration status, purpose, address, source of funds, tax information and the product requested can all affect the decision. Requirements can also differ between banks and branches.

Can I open the account before I arrive?

Treat a fully usable account before arrival as the exception. Some banks offer an online start or international customer service, but identity checks, local contact details, biometric capture or branch activation may still be required. Keep your existing payment routes working until the new account and recovery process have been tested.

Does a visa guarantee that a bank will accept me?

No. A visa can help establish lawful status or purpose, but the bank still decides whether the customer and product fit its risk policy. Do not pay an agent who claims a particular visa guarantees approval.

Will a different branch give a different answer?

It can. Staff experience and internal escalation routes differ, but that does not make every refusal a mistake. Ask for the written product requirements, check whether an appointment or specialist branch is available and never alter facts to fit a branch's interpretation.

Do I need a local phone number?

It is commonly needed for alerts, one-time passwords, app registration and account recovery. Ask whether the bank accepts your chosen mobile network and what happens if the SIM, phone or number changes. Keep your original number active until every important service has been moved deliberately.

Should both adults have separate accounts?

Often yes, if both are eligible. Separate everyday access reduces the risk that one lost phone, frozen card or compliance review stops the household. Ask how joint accounts, additional cards, emergency contacts and deposit-protection aggregation work before relying on them.

Are e-wallet balances protected like bank deposits?

Do not assume so. A wallet, stored-value balance and bank deposit can sit under different legal arrangements. Identify the company holding the funds, the regulated product and whether the balance itself qualifies for the country's statutory deposit-protection scheme.

How often should I recheck this guide?

Check the regulator, protection scheme and shortlisted bank again before applying or moving a material balance. Bank onboarding and authentication procedures can change faster than general relocation guidance.

Do I need a KITAS to open an Indonesian account?

A KITAS or KITAP is commonly the clearest evidence for a resident account, but product rules differ. OJK has also described specified foreign-customer cases using a passport plus additional evidence. Ask the bank about your exact status and never assume either route guarantees acceptance.

How do I keep an Indonesian deposit within LPS protection?

Check that the bank participates, the recorded balance is within the limit and the interest does not exceed LPS's current guarantee rate. The depositor must also meet the scheme's other eligibility condition. Recheck the live rate whenever a deposit renews.
