Dental care in Vietnam for expat families

Vietnam's major cities have a substantial choice of private dentists, but finding an attractive clinic is easier than checking its credentials. Ask for the named dentist's current practice licence and the exact facility's operating licence, then compare communication, consent and follow-up care as carefully as price.

The short answer

What is family dental care like in Vietnam?

Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi have the greatest depth; Da Nang is a capable routine-care base with fewer alternatives for complex paediatric, surgical or anaesthetic cases. Vietnam's 2023 Law on Medical Examination and Treatment and Decree 96 took effect on 1 January 2024. Treat practitioner permission and facility permission as two different checks.

Plan routine, specialist and emergency care

Four levels of dental care to research

A convenient general dentist is only the starting point. Research a named specialist and hospital option before a child's, orthodontic or medically complex need makes the decision urgent.

Level 01

Prevention + routine care

Examinations, hygiene, prevention, fillings and a child-friendly first relationship.

Level 02

Paediatric + orthodontic

A clinician with the right training for child behaviour, growth, braces or additional needs.

Level 03

Complex treatment

Root canal, advanced gum care, crowns, implants and multi-stage rehabilitation.

Level 04

Hospital escalation

Facial trauma, spreading infection, significant medical complexity, sedation or general anaesthesia.

Care options vary by city

Compare local dental access from each family base

This is a broad comparison, not a claim that every clinic provides every service. Swipe the table on smaller screens.

Family baseWhat it works well forLikely choice of careWhat to check
Ho Chi Minh CityDeep private and international-facing market with multiple specialist routes.Strong general, paediatric, orthodontic, restorative and surgical choice plus large hospitals.Marketing in English does not prove the treating clinician, scope or out-of-hours hospital pathway.
HanoiDeep capital-city network with central and university-linked referral options.Broad routine and specialist provision with tertiary depth.Cross-city travel and language at referral level can be harder than the initial private-clinic experience.
Da NangPractical for routine dentistry and many planned treatments.Good general/private access with a smaller pool for complex paediatric, maxillofacial or anaesthetic cases.Ask which cases leave the clinic or city and how records, payment and transfer are coordinated.

Check the details before you consent

Four checks for the exact treatment

The dentist's credentials, the clinic's authority and the proposed treatment answer different questions. Save the relevant information before paying a deposit or agreeing to an irreversible procedure.

01

Practice licence

The 2023 law introduced time-limited practice licences under the new framework and a transition from older certificates.

02

Facility operating licence

Decree 96 sets conditions for a medical examination and treatment establishment's operation.

03

Meaningful consent

A translated sales conversation is not the same as a clinical discussion with the treating dentist.

04

Records you can take with you

Complex treatment can be difficult to repair elsewhere when the materials or records are unclear.

What matters most

Four parts of a dependable dental plan in Vietnam

An English-speaking clinic may feel convenient, but you should still check four separate things before treatment: the dentist, the facility, your understanding of the plan and the follow-up arrangements.

Check 1

Licensed dentist

The named dentist's current permission to practise and the work they are allowed to provide, not only a clinic biography.

Check 2

Licensed facility

The exact facility's operating permission and suitable equipment for the proposed treatment.

Check 3

A plan you understand

The diagnosis, options, risks, costs and consent explained directly and recorded clearly.

Check 4

Follow-up care

Records, an urgent contact, revision terms and access to hospital care when needed.

The checks depend on the treatment

What to confirm before care and keep afterwards

A general check-up and a multi-stage implant need very different research and records. These prompts are a minimum, not a clinical prescription.

TreatmentWhat to confirm before consentWhat to keep for follow-up care

Know where to go

Dental problem, urgent dentist or hospital emergency?

This is planning guidance, not diagnosis. When symptoms are severe or rapidly worsening, use local emergency services and an appropriate hospital.

Urgent dentist

Pain, fracture or lost filling/crown

Use a provider able to examine and document the problem; do not accept an irreversible plan from chat or a sales quotation.

Dentist today

Swelling, fever or suspected infection

Seek urgent clinical assessment and source treatment, with a clear hospital referral if symptoms spread.

Hospital now

Airway, swallowing, eye, major swelling, bleeding or major trauma

Go to an appropriate emergency department immediately rather than waiting for an ordinary clinic.

Research before the move

Prepare the family's dental records and shortlist before moving

You can complete or narrow down every step before arrival. Use a viewing trip to confirm a shortlist rather than beginning the search from scratch.

  1. 01

    Request both licences

Ask each shortlisted clinic for practitioner and exact-facility evidence before relying on reviews or price.

  2. 02

    Test clinical English

Have the treating dentist explain one realistic diagnosis, option and complication—not only the coordinator.

  3. 03

    Name the referral hospital

Match child trauma, spreading infection and medically complex/sedation needs to a receiving facility.

  4. 04

Agree which records you will receive

Ask what notes and images the clinic will provide after routine, orthodontic and complex treatment.

Connect the healthcare decision

Dental access belongs inside the wider family plan

Join the dentist to insurance, hospital care, transport and location research. A strong provider is not useful if the family cannot reach it repeatedly.

Common questions

Questions about dental care in Vietnam

Is dental care good in Vietnam for expat families?

Major cities contain capable private and specialist providers, but quality is not uniform. Verify the named dentist, the facility's operating licence, clinical communication, treatment records and the hospital/aftercare path for the specific procedure.

How are dentists regulated in Vietnam?

The Law on Medical Examination and Treatment 15/2023/QH15 and Decree 96/2023 form the current framework from 1 January 2024. Families should ask for the practitioner's current practice licence and the exact facility's operating licence.

Which Vietnamese city is best for family dentistry?

Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi have the broadest specialist and tertiary networks. Da Nang can work very well for routine care, but a family with complex paediatric, surgical or anaesthetic needs should identify named local capability and any external referral.

Is dental treatment cheap in Vietnam?

Some advertised fees are low compared with private prices in higher-cost countries, but they may not include complete diagnosis, imaging, laboratory, materials, temporary work, anaesthesia, review or revision. Compare itemised episodes only after a clinical examination.

Will a dentist speak English in Vietnam?

Many private clinics market English-language access, especially in major cities. Confirm that the treating clinician—not only a coordinator—can explain diagnosis, alternatives, risks and aftercare, or that a competent interpreter will support informed consent.

Can my child get braces in Vietnam?

Orthodontic treatment is available, especially in HCMC and Hanoi. Verify the provider's permitted scope and experience, the exact appliance, total visits and cost, emergency repairs, records and whether a future orthodontist in another country will accept transfer.

Does insurance cover dentistry in Vietnam?

Routine dentistry is frequently excluded or capped, while accident benefits may differ. Check outpatient dental limits, waiting periods, networks, direct billing, pre-authorisation and exclusions for orthodontics, implants and pre-existing disease.

When is a dental problem a hospital emergency?

Difficulty breathing, speaking or swallowing, eye swelling or visual change, major mouth/facial swelling, uncontrolled bleeding or serious facial trauma requires hospital emergency care. Suspected abscess and increasing swelling still need urgent dental assessment.
