Mobile plans, broadband and streaming in Thailand
Thailand makes it fairly easy to get connected, but the tourist SIM that works on arrival is not automatically the best long-term family number. Compare coverage at the exact home and school, understand the plan's validity, and keep streaming accounts separate from broadband bundles until you know what follows you when you move.

The short answer
How should a family get connected in Thailand?
Use an official AIS or True-dtac channel to register a SIM with your passport, keep your home-country number active for account recovery, and test both leading mobile networks at the actual home-school route. For broadband, check serviceability for the exact unit and read the minimum term, installation and bundle conditions. A fast advertised speed cannot fix weak Wi-Fi through concrete walls.
Choose a number that can stay with you
Compare mobile plans by real family use
Published examples are a starting point, not a recommendation. Prices, allowances and promotions were checked on 2 September 2026; confirm the current official offer and registration route before buying.
AIS
Large national network with prepaid, tourist SIM/eSIM and postpaid choices.
Official tourist offers displayed from 399 baht for 5 days to 1,599 baht for 60 days when checked.
True-dtac
Combined consumer group with prepaid, tourist SIM/eSIM and postpaid products.
Official tourist offers displayed 449 baht for 8 days, 699 baht for 15 days and 1,199 baht for 30 days when checked.
Keep a second network
Useful where work, school or navigation cannot depend on one signal path.
One adult can carry the second network or keep a low-cost eSIM rather than duplicating every family plan.
Broadband belongs in the property research
Check the exact home, not just the provider's coverage map
A provider may serve the street but have no port, permission or reliable indoor Wi-Fi for one unit. Ask for an address-specific result before the lease becomes difficult to undo.
AIS 3BB FIBRE3
Broad fibre range, optional entertainment and mesh/Wi-Fi products.
The official page showed plans from 269 baht for 50/20 Mbps and several 500 Mbps–1 Gbps choices when checked.
TrueOnline
A second major fixed-broadband option, often with mobile or entertainment bundles.
Compare the current internet-only price with any bundled TV, mobile or device offer rather than valuing the headline gift at full price.
No-contract or short-term route
Potentially useful for a first rental or uncertain address.
AIS FlexiFIBRE showed prepaid 400/400 to 1,000/500 Mbps packages in selected provinces when checked, but availability was narrow and promotional.
The city name is not a signal test
Connectivity changes from one address to the next
Use these location patterns to focus your questions. They cannot replace a test in the exact room where the family will work, study and sleep.
Bangkok
Dense fibre and 5G choice, with building-by-building differences in older condos and outer districts.
- Watch for
- Concrete walls, high-rise equipment and a landlord-selected provider can matter more than the city-wide coverage map.
- Research from home
- Ask the building for installed providers, test both mobile networks in the unit and run evening video calls.
Chiang Mai
Good urban connectivity, with more variation outside the core and around mountain-facing areas.
- Watch for
- Air-quality season can increase reliance on home working and indoor entertainment at the same time.
- Research from home
- Test upload and mobile backup where the family will live, not only at a central café or hotel.
Phuket
Strong service in many developed areas, but island geography and fast-growing neighbourhoods create address-level gaps.
- Watch for
- A villa may have impressive advertised coverage but weak last-mile installation, indoor signal or outage recovery.
- Research from home
- Make fixed-line availability and two-network mobile tests part of the property viewing.
Bring the profiles, not the billing assumptions
Move streaming and app-store accounts one at a time
Country, billing, catalogue, family and device rules are different for every service. Keep a simple account list and change nothing until the local payment route and recovery details work.
Netflix
Netflix says a permanent country move requires cancelling and signing up again in the new country; price, currency, payment methods and catalogue can change.
Apple and Google
Store country affects apps, content and subscriptions. Apple may require balance to be spent and blocking subscriptions cancelled; Google requires local presence and payment and limits how often the country can change.
Spotify and other subscriptions
A country change may require a locally issued payment method and can affect price or catalogue. Thai broadband/mobile bundles may include entertainment for a fixed period.
Smart TVs and devices
An app-store region, TV operating system, device model or rights restriction can affect availability even when a service operates in Thailand.
Keep access before changing regions. Save recovery codes, add an authenticator or passkey where supported, check every child's account and preserve the old phone number until the family has tested sign-in and recovery abroad.
A calm order for the first month
Set up connectivity without locking yourself out
Each step should leave the family with more access than before. Do not cancel, port, change device and change account country on the same day.
- 01
Arrive with a bridge
Use roaming or an official tourist SIM/eSIM for maps and calls without cancelling the number that protects existing accounts.
- 02
Test the places that matter
Compare signal at the home, school, commute and regular clinic before moving the family to one operator.
- 03
Choose the stable number
Ask how identity re-verification, top-ups, inactive periods and a move from tourist to resident use affect the number.
- 04
Order broadband after address proof
Confirm landlord consent, installation date, minimum term, router/mesh and cancellation in writing.
- 05
Move account recovery last
Add passkeys, authenticator apps and backup codes before changing banking, email or password-manager phone numbers.
Common questions
Questions about phones, broadband and streaming in Thailand
What is the best mobile network in Thailand for families?
There is no reliable country-wide winner for one family. AIS and True-dtac are the main comparisons, but indoor coverage at the exact home, school and commute should decide. Test prepaid lines before moving important accounts or committing to a longer plan.
Can foreigners buy a SIM card in Thailand?
Yes, through the operator's current registration process using accepted identity, commonly a passport for visitors. Use an official shop or authorised channel, make sure the line is registered in your own name and keep the registration confirmation.
Is a Thailand tourist SIM suitable for a long-term move?
It is a useful arrival bridge, but check validity, identity re-verification, renewal and whether the number can remain stable after resident documents arrive. Do not attach banking and recovery to a short product until the continuity route is clear.
How much does home broadband cost in Thailand?
Published offers vary by speed, address, promotion and bundle. When checked in September 2026, AIS displayed examples from 269 baht a month for 50/20 Mbps and several faster choices. Verify the live price, VAT, term, installation and serviceability for the exact unit.
Do Thai broadband plans include Netflix or TV?
Some mobile and broadband packages include an operator entertainment service or a third-party subscription for a set period. Check who owns the account, the included tier, renewal price, cancellation and whether the benefit ends before the broadband contract.
Will my Netflix account work after moving to Thailand?
Netflix can be used while travelling, but its official guidance says a permanent move requires cancellation and a new sign-up in the new country. Pricing, billing currency, payment options and catalogue may differ.
Should we change our Apple or Google account region immediately?
Usually not before auditing subscriptions, balances, Family Sharing and essential apps. Apple and Google impose different prerequisites and consequences. Keep access stable, obtain a local payment method if required and change one family system at a time.
What internet backup should remote-working parents have in Thailand?
Use fixed broadband plus a hotspot-capable SIM on a second mobile network where possible, charged power banks or a small UPS, and a tested alternate work location. Confirm employer security rules before relying on public Wi-Fi.
