Pregnancy, maternity and newborn care in Vietnam

Vietnam offers major public obstetric centres and growing private/international options, but language, payment and neonatal depth vary sharply by facility and city. The Ministry of Health updated the national recommended congenital-screening lists in 2026, making it especially important to ask what the chosen hospital actually provides and how results follow the baby.

The short answer

How should a family plan maternity care in Vietnam?

For the widest choice of maternity and neonatal care, compare named hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi. In Da Nang, ask which cases would need to transfer and where. Vietnam's 2026 Ministry of Health screening list is a national recommendation, but individual hospitals may not offer every test. For a birth involving a foreign parent, confirm the local registration office, nationality documents, translations or legalisation, and the baby's immigration status before birth.

Plan every handover

Keep care continuous from the current clinic to the first newborn review

For each stage, know which clinician or team will take over, which records they need and what will happen if the plan changes. These are planning prompts, not a clinical schedule.

  1. Before moving

    Clinical review

Ask the current maternity team whether the timing, route and destination are suitable for this pregnancy. Record complications, medicines, allergies and what would change the plan.

  2. Before flying

    Travel documents

Check the airline’s own pregnancy policy, obtain any fit-to-fly letter it requires and carry maternity records in hand luggage. Include every transit and return leg.

  3. On arrival

    Named local team

Book a handover before the carried plan runs out. Transfer dating evidence, scan reports and images, blood group and antibody results, laboratory results and previous pregnancy history.

  4. Late pregnancy

    Birth capability

Confirm where to attend in labour and after hours, who covers obstetrics and anaesthesia, and whether blood, theatre, adult critical care and the required neonatal capability are on site.

  5. After birth

    Two patients

Arrange maternal follow-up separately from the baby’s screening, feeding, jaundice, weight, vaccination and paediatric follow-up. Record who receives every result.

  6. Before travel

    Identity + status

Complete local birth registration, decide the child’s nationality route, obtain a passport and regularise local immigration status before assuming the baby can leave or re-enter.

A clear record that can travel

Prepare an organised maternity record for the new care team

The receiving team needs a clear current summary and the relevant records behind it. Ask both the departing and receiving clinicians whether anything else is needed for this pregnancy.

Pregnancy handover
1

Pregnancy identity

Estimated due date and how it was established, gestation today, parity, blood group, antibodies and emergency contacts.

2

History + risk

Previous births and surgery, current complications, long-term conditions, allergies, medicines and the clinician’s risk classification.

3

Tests and scans

Scan reports and images, screening choices and results, laboratory results, vaccination record and relevant specialist letters.

4

Current plan

Next appointments/tests, warning signs specific to the pregnancy, birth preferences, blood/anaesthetic issues and referral triggers.

5

Portable copies

A concise clinician summary plus full paper and encrypted offline copies; do not rely on a home-country portal working overseas.

Check medical capability before comfort

Choose the exact facility for the pregnancy, not the hospital brand

A room tour and maternity package tell you little about emergency obstetric care or neonatal limits. Ask the hospital to answer these questions for the exact campus and expected dates.

Routine antenatal care

Designed for
Uncomplicated appointments, standard screening and planned follow-up.
What to confirm
Named obstetric team, appointment language, test panel, result ownership and an after-hours contact.
If more care is needed
A hospital with maternity triage and the pregnancy record already on file.

Planned birth

Designed for
The intended mode of birth when pregnancy and labour remain within the agreed plan.
What to confirm
24/7 labour ward, obstetrician, anaesthetist, theatre, blood access, paediatric attendance and escalation thresholds.
If more care is needed
Written transfer agreement, receiving hospital and realistic transfer time in bad traffic/weather.

High-risk maternal care

Designed for
Placental, blood-pressure, diabetes, multiple-pregnancy or other risks needing specialist oversight.
What to confirm
Maternal-fetal medicine access, adult ICU, blood products, required imaging/labs and senior cover on the exact dates.
If more care is needed
Book directly with a tertiary centre rather than treating transfer as the primary plan.

Preterm or unwell newborn

Designed for
Care depends on gestation, birthweight, breathing and other needs—not simply a sign saying NICU.
What to confirm
Neonatologist cover, respiratory support limits, nurse capacity, transport incubator and which gestations/conditions the unit accepts.
If more care is needed
Named higher-level NICU, neonatal transport team, payer approval and parent-accommodation plan.

Ask separately about each type of care

Check routine, maternal-emergency and newborn bills separately

Ask the hospital and insurer the same questions and keep both written answers. A package is a price list and a policy is a contract; neither automatically covers every cost for both patients.

1

Antenatal + routine birth

ConfirmConsultations, scans, tests, professional fees, room, planned delivery and postpartum reviews.

WatchA package price may exclude doctor, anaesthesia, newborn, medicines, extra nights or a change in delivery mode.

2

Maternal complication

ConfirmEmergency Caesarean, blood, ICU, imaging, transfer and readmission, including pre-authorisation rules.

WatchA maternity exclusion may coexist with limited complication cover; verbal reassurance is not policy wording.

3

Newborn + NICU

ConfirmImmediate paediatric care, screening, nursery, prematurity, congenital conditions, NICU and neonatal transfer.

WatchThe mother’s policy or hospital package may not make the baby insured. Enrolment windows can be short.

Maternity eligibility

Was maternity cover active before conception, is there a waiting period, and are routine antenatal care and delivery included or capped?

Complications

Does the policy distinguish normal pregnancy from an unexpected maternal complication, and how are emergency Caesarean, ICU, blood and transfer treated?

The baby

Is the newborn automatically covered, only for a short window, or only after enrolment and medical underwriting? Ask specifically about prematurity, congenital conditions and NICU.

Provider + payment

Which named hospitals can direct bill, what needs pre-authorisation, what deposit is still required and which invoices/reports must be retained?

Plan the first days after birth

Know who will follow up every newborn check

For each test, confirm when the result should arrive, who reviews it and what happens after discharge. Check the local schedule with the paediatric team.

Care areaBefore birthAfter birthWho follows it up
Immediate careAsk about paediatric attendance, skin-to-skin, feeding support and what happens after an assisted or Caesarean birth.Obtain the baby’s discharge summary, examination findings, treatments and escalation advice.Birth hospital + named paediatrician
ScreeningGet the written national/standard and optional screening panel, sampling window, price and laboratory destination.Record sample time, result date, contact route, repeats and referral plan; do not assume silence means normal.Named screening coordinator
Hearing + heartAsk whether hearing screening and pulse-oximetry/critical-heart screening are routine at this facility.Keep results and complete any repeat or diagnostic referral before moving cities where possible.Paediatrics / audiology
Feeding, jaundice + weightIdentify lactation/feeding support and the first post-discharge clinic.Attend the booked review and use the hospital’s urgent route for poor feeding, unusual sleepiness, breathing trouble, fever or worsening jaundice.Paediatric/newborn clinic
VaccinationCompare the birth-dose and infant schedule with the future country’s schedule; ask about brands and records.Collect a signed record with date, product, batch and provider so the next clinician can continue accurately.Hospital + future child-health service

From birth registration to lawful travel

A birth certificate is only the first step

Start before the due date. Parent nationality, marital status, residence and name spellings can change the documents required. Check with the relevant local authority and the child's nationality and immigration authorities.

  1. 01

    Hospital birth evidence

Check both parents’ names, spellings, dates and nationality fields before discharge. Ask which office receives the notification and which originals the hospital keeps.

Save: Hospital birth notification/certificate and discharge records
  2. 02

    Local civil registration

Use Vietnam’s birth-registration procedure involving a foreign element through the competent local public-administration/civil-status authority. The national portal describes direct and online routes; document needs vary with the parents’ citizenship, residence and marital status and may require Vietnamese translation/legalisation.

Save: Local birth certificate and certified copies
  3. 03

    Nationality decision

Determine whether citizenship is automatic, available by descent or needs an application. Birth in a country does not necessarily grant its citizenship.

Save: Written rule or nationality confirmation
  4. 04

    Passport

Apply through the child’s nationality authority. Ask whether a separate consular birth registration, citizenship certificate or parent-status evidence is required first.

Save: Child passport or emergency document if eligible
  5. 05

    Local immigration status

A newborn does not simply inherit a parent’s visa. Ask immigration about reporting, dependant status, deadlines, fees and permission to leave/re-enter.

Save: Child’s visa, pass, permit or formal confirmation

Maternity access varies by location

Compare care from each likely family base

These are broad descriptions, not hospital endorsements. Confirm current clinicians, services and transfer arrangements with the provider and insurer.

Ho Chi Minh City

Vietnam's widest mix of international and private maternity care, major public obstetric centres and paediatric or neonatal referrals.

Check before choosing the home

Exact bilingual team, maternal-fetal and NICU limits, district-to-hospital journey, deposit or direct billing and referral acceptance.

Hanoi

Strong national and specialist obstetric, paediatric and neonatal care with private and international options.

Check before choosing the home

Which site and team will deliver, language support after hours, winter air-quality plan and the separate bills for mother and baby.

Da Nang

Good routine and regional maternity care, with fewer subspecialist options than HCMC or Hanoi.

Check before choosing the home

Which high-risk maternal and preterm newborn cases can stay, the named higher-level referral, transport capability and payment approval.

Risks are address-specific

Connect pregnancy planning to live local conditions

Disease, weather and transfer risks change by place and season. Recheck official advice and ask a pregnancy-qualified clinician before travel.

Dengue, Zika + malaria by itinerary

Seek pregnancy-specific advice for the exact province and season, and use suitable bite prevention.

Recheck liveTravelHealthPro Vietnam + Vietnam MOH alerts

Heat, air pollution + food/water illness

Plan safe hydration, food hygiene and lower-exposure travel; ask the clinician what symptoms need urgent review.

Recheck liveOfficial weather, air-quality and health alerts

Typhoon, flood + traffic

Keep a second hospital route, offline records and enough time to cross the city in severe weather.

Recheck liveVietnam disaster and meteorological warnings

Five assumptions to check

Resolve important uncertainties before the due date

Each assumption can hide a clinical, financial or document issue that may become urgent later.

01

Recommended screen equals universal delivery

The national list guides screening; the exact facility, laboratory, timing and follow-up must be confirmed.

02

English at booking equals English in labour

Ask how consent, triage and overnight communication work when the named coordinator is off duty.

03

Package price includes every clinician

Professional fees, anaesthesia, unplanned surgery, medicines, newborn and NICU can be separate.

04

Birth certificate finishes immigration

The baby still needs a nationality/passport route and lawful Vietnamese status before travel/re-entry.

05

Da Nang without tertiary fallback

A regional base needs an explicit maternal and neonatal referral plan, not a general promise to transfer if necessary.

Connect the family plan

Include maternity care in the wider move

Hospital access depends on insurance, legal status, prescriptions, housing and a practical emergency journey.

Common questions

Questions about pregnancy and newborn care in Vietnam

Is it safe to move to Southeast Asia while pregnant?

There is no single safe week or universal answer. A clinician who knows the pregnancy should assess complications, gestation, journey length, infection exposure and the destination’s care. Airlines commonly request pregnancy documentation later in pregnancy and may impose their own cut-offs, so check every operating carrier and transit rather than relying on a general rule.

Will ordinary travel insurance cover giving birth abroad?

Do not assume so. Travel insurance and international health insurance are different products, and routine maternity care is often limited, capped, subject to a waiting period or excluded. Obtain written answers for antenatal care, delivery, maternal complications, emergency transfer, the newborn, congenital conditions, prematurity and NICU before relying on a policy.

What pregnancy records should I take overseas?

Carry a concise clinical handover and the underlying records: due date and dating evidence, scan reports and images, blood group and antibodies, laboratory and screening results, previous pregnancy and surgery history, current diagnoses, medicines, allergies, vaccination record, next steps and emergency contacts. Keep paper and secure offline copies.

Does a baby born abroad automatically receive a parent’s nationality?

Not necessarily. Citizenship by descent and any citizenship acquired by birthplace depend on the laws and circumstances involved. Register the birth under local rules, then check each possible nationality with the responsible authority before applying for a passport and the child’s local immigration status.

How do I compare maternity hospitals?

Compare the exact site, not the hospital brand. Ask about 24-hour maternity triage, senior obstetric cover, anaesthesia, operating theatre, blood availability, adult critical care, paediatric presence, the level and limits of neonatal care, transfer agreements, language support, companion rules, deposits and insurer authorisation.

Which newborn tests will my baby receive?

Screening panels and timing vary by country, hospital and clinical need. Before birth, ask for the written local panel, optional additions, hearing and critical-heart screening arrangements, when the sample is taken, who receives the result, how a repeat or positive screen is handled and whether you may travel before results return.

Can an expat give birth in Vietnam?

Foreign patients can arrange maternity care with hospitals that accept them, but the appropriate facility depends on the pregnancy and the newborn capability required. Confirm booking, bilingual communication, deposits, insurance, emergency escalation and civil-registration documents directly with the exact hospital and local authority.

What newborn screening is available in Vietnam?

Vietnam’s Ministry of Health issued updated recommended prenatal and newborn congenital-condition screening lists in 2026. Availability is not uniform. Ask the hospital for the exact included and optional panel, laboratory, sample timing, result date, repeat process and referral pathway before booking.
