The short answer: Keep at least two lawful ways to access money, but tell every provider your genuine overseas residence and tax status. Set up myGov access that does not depend on a soon-to-be-cancelled phone, report Centrelink and study-loan changes where required, and give each important account a tested recovery plan.
Ask each bank what the actual destination changes
There is no single policy for every Australian bank, broker or product. Some providers can service existing overseas customers but may restrict new accounts, lending, investment purchases, advice or specific jurisdictions. Ask about the exact country, account type and intended transactions, then save the response.
Banks collect tax-residency and foreign tax identification information under international reporting rules. Update residential, postal and tax details honestly. Keeping an Australian mailing address does not make it your residence, and inaccurate information can create frozen accounts or incorrect reporting later.
- Confirm overseas residential and postal addresses can be recorded separately.
- Ask about cards, transfers, daily limits, overseas fees and replacement delivery.
- Check offset, mortgage, brokerage and children's accounts independently.
- Keep a second bank or payment route and a modest emergency reserve.
- Make one small transfer to the destination before relying on the route for school or housing payments.
Prepare myGov and myID before the Australian mobile changes
myGov can be accessed overseas, but the sign-in method needs to work there. Current options include the myGov app, passkeys, Digital ID and myGov sign-in details. If you rely on SMS or a code generator, confirm the number and device will remain available. Set up and test more than one secure route on trusted devices before departure.
myID is Australia's Digital ID app and is separate from myGov. It is commonly used for business and tax services. Business owners, company directors, trustees and authorised agents should test myID, Relationship Authorisation Manager and overseas support routes before the people who can authorise access separate geographically.
Worth knowing: Do not share a myGov login between spouses. Each adult should control their own account and authorise formal representatives through the service's supported process where needed.
Tell Services Australia before payments become a problem
If anyone receives Centrelink or another Services Australia payment, report the move or travel through the current channel before departure. Some payments stop when a person lives overseas, while others can continue only in limited circumstances or at a different rate. A partner's or dependent child's travel can matter too.
Do not budget on a payment continuing until Services Australia confirms it for the person's benefit and circumstances. Save the submission, decision and overseas contact route. Check Medicare separately because healthcare enrolment and income-support portability are not the same question.
Keep HELP and other training loans in the annual routine
The ATO requires people with covered study or training loans who intend to reside overseas for 183 days or more in any 12 months to update contact details and submit an overseas travel notification within seven days of leaving. Annual worldwide-income reporting or a non-lodgment advice may then be required, whether the person remains an Australian resident or becomes foreign resident for tax purposes.
Save the loan balance, payment reference number, notification receipt and yearly calculation. Currency conversion and assessment methods can change, so use the ATO instructions for the relevant income year rather than an old threshold from a forum or social post.
Finish voting, mail, licences and household records
Australians intending to return within six years may be able to register as an overseas elector. The AEC says an already enrolled person can generally register up to three months before departure or within three years after leaving; the registration lasts six years and can be extended in one-year periods through the prescribed process. A person moving indefinitely follows a different notification route.
Update important organisations directly instead of relying on mail redirection. Check state or territory driving-licence and vehicle rules, insurance, professional registrations, utilities, schools, medical providers and the electoral authority separately. Keep an Australian mobile only if the cost and roaming reliability make sense; it should not be the family's only recovery method.
- Create an organisation-by-organisation address and status log with confirmation dates.
- Redirect ordinary mail and appoint a trusted person for anything that cannot go digital.
- Download tax, Centrelink, Medicare, super, banking and insurance statements.
- Cancel services only after final bills, refunds, direct debits and equipment returns are complete.
- Keep passport, certificates, licence history and key account contacts securely offline.
