🇹🇭 Bangkok family budget · 2026
Cost of living in Bangkok for families
Bangkok can support very different family budgets, but school location and weekday travel decide more than cheap meals do. These figures start with a three-bedroom home, one real international-school place and family-safe transport rather than a solo-expat lifestyle.

The short answer
What should a family budget in Bangkok?
A useful planning range is ฿125,000-฿285,000 a month for two adults and two children with one international-school place. The lower model uses an accessible school and an outer or school-side home; the upper model combines premium tuition, a prime family area and more paid transport and support.
Three realistic family scenarios
Choose the model closest to your family
Each scenario covers two adults and two children, with one international-school place. It is a starting point for research—not a promise that every family will spend the same.
Families choosing an accessible school and living near it
Careful school-first plan
Older or outer three-bedroom home, one lower-fee international school, local-heavy groceries, mixed rail/taxi travel and modest activities.
A balanced international-family routine
Comfortable Bangkok plan
Practical family home, one mid-market school place, mixed groceries, insurance allowance, regular ride-hailing or school transport and some household help.
Families prioritising premium school, housing and support
Premium and flexible plan
Prime or high-demand housing, premium tuition, broader insurance, frequent taxis or driver support, imported shopping, clubs and a larger travel reserve.

A complete worked family budget
Inside the comfortable bangkok plan
This example adds up properly to ฿180,000 a month. Replace each line with the homes, school, insurance and journeys your family is actually considering.

Groceries and household
฿22,000Local food plus regular imported or allergy-specific items for four people.
Utilities and internet

Useful figures to check against your own shortlist
These are traceable reference points, not a single “average family” claim. Rental and school markets are wide, so use the notes beside each figure.
| Budget line | Published or observed price | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 3-bed rent, outside centre | ฿24,783/month | City snapshot; school clusters can price above the centre/outside-centre split. |
| 3-bed rent, Bang Na listings | roughly ฿26,600-฿100,000/month | Current portal examples near a major school corridor; verify every live listing. |
| Utilities, 85m² home | ฿3,515/month | Electricity, cooling, water and refuse city benchmark. |
| Broadband 60Mbps+ | ฿604/month | City benchmark before installation or mesh equipment. |
| One local journey | ฿36.50 | Mixed public-transport benchmark; the BTS day pass is ฿150. |
| International primary school | ฿570,960/year | City snapshot; named school schedules show a much wider market. |
Rent and initial deposits
Budget for the home and the cash needed before moving in
Choose housing after the school and weekday journeys make sense. A cheaper home can cost more overall if it creates a difficult daily route.
Near-school value
฿25,000-฿50,000/monthOlder condos or houses outside the prime centre can work when the exact school and work routes line up.
Established family areas
฿45,000-฿90,000/monthLarger or newer homes around central/eastern Sukhumvit, Bang Na and selected compounds often sit here.
Cash before keys
Often two months' deposit + one month in advanceThis is a common market request, not a universal legal rule. Confirm whether consumer rules cover the lessor and record refund terms.
International-school costs
Build the first-year bill, not just the tuition line
Bangkok Patana's published 2026/27 schedule also lists application, entrance, capital and refundable-deposit amounts. Compare the complete first-year invoice, not only the monthly equivalent.
Check the published fee scheduleGroceries, utilities and internet
Use a household basket that looks like your real week
Start with local staples, then add the imported, allergy-specific, school-lunch and household products your family actually buys. Cooling, larger homes and backup connectivity can matter more than headline utility averages suggest.
Food and household
฿22,000/monthWorked-plan allowance for four people.
Utilities and internet
฿6,000/monthCooling, water and connectivity allowance.
Transport and school journeys
Price the family week, not one cheap fare
Map school, work, healthcare and activities at the times they really happen. Include child restraints, waiting time, parking, tolls and a bad-weather backup where relevant.
Rail-shaped week
BTS/MRT can control adult commute costs, but many school gates still need a taxi, shuttle or bus. Price the full door-to-door journey.
School bus
Published two-way school-bus fees at premium schools can exceed ฿100,000 a year. Check the route, earliest pickup and after-activity return.
Car or driver
Add finance or depreciation, fuel, tolls, parking, insurance, child restraints and paid help. A car does not remove Bangkok traffic.
Healthcare, insurance and family support
Plan routine care and the difficult day
Use named clinics, hospitals and insurer networks, then decide what can be self-funded and what needs cover. Treat domestic help, nursery and after-school care as separate arrangements.
Insurance
Use a real family quote with the intended Bangkok hospitals, deductible, outpatient choice and regional evacuation wording.
Routine care
Decide whether routine consultations and prescriptions are self-funded or insured, then keep deposit cash available even with direct billing.
Help and childcare
Part-time help can be affordable, but do not build the plan around an unverified informal rate. Include lawful terms, leave, replacement cover and safeguarding.
Initial relocation costs
Keep a separate fund for the expensive first months
Rental, school and arrival payments often land before ordinary monthly spending settles down. Do not use the emergency reserve to hide a predictable setup bill.
- 01
Rental landing
฿120,000-฿300,000Temporary accommodation, deposit, advance rent, inspection, utility and household setup. - 02
School joining
฿100,000-฿350,000+Application, assessment, entrance, capital and refundable deposits before recurring tuition. - 03
Arrival and documents
฿80,000-฿220,000Flights, baggage, translations, immigration, insurance start-up and local transport setup.
Emergency contingency
Start with ฿540,000 outside the move fund
Start with three months of the comfortable recurring budget, held separately from rental and school deposits. Add a return-flight and school-change allowance if one income or visa route carries most of the risk.

Common questions
Cost of living in Bangkok: family questions
How much should a family of four budget each month in Bangkok?
Use the three scenarios on this page as planning models for two adults and two children with one international-school place. The correct figure depends on the exact school year, home-school journey, insurance quote and whether a second child needs paid school or childcare.
Do these budgets include international school?
Yes. Every scenario includes a sinking fund for one international-school place. School invoices are normally annual or termly, so the monthly figure is for comparison only: the family still needs enough cash for the school's real due dates and first-year joining charges.
Are these official averages?
No. They are independent family planning scenarios built from current city price snapshots, live rental evidence, published school fees and provider information. They deliberately avoid presenting one household example as a city-wide average.
Why keep prices in Thai baht?
Rent, utilities, transport and many school costs are paid in Thai baht. Keeping the original amount makes the research auditable and prevents an exchange-rate movement from being mistaken for a local price change.
How should we use the five-currency conversions?
Use them to understand affordability in the currency your income or savings are held in. They are rounded planning conversions, not transaction quotes. Keep a buffer for exchange movements and transfer fees, particularly before large school or rental payments.
Does the monthly budget include relocation setup?
No. Rental deposits, temporary accommodation, school application and enrolment charges, flights, document work, furnishings and vehicle setup are shown separately because they arrive before normal monthly spending settles down.
How much emergency money should we keep?
The page gives a city-specific starting reserve. Increase it if only one adult earns, the visa depends on employment, a family member has complex health needs, school fees are non-refundable or a rapid international move would be expensive.
How often should we update the budget?
Recheck rental listings, school schedules, insurance quotes and exchange rates before paying anything material, then review the working budget at least every three months during the first year.
Is ฿100,000 a month enough for a family in Bangkok?
It may work without international school or with unusually low housing and education costs. For the family model on this page, which includes one international-school place and private-health planning, ฿100,000 leaves little room for school fees, setup costs and contingency.
Is it cheaper to live near the school or near work?
There is no automatic answer. Compare the total time and cost of both adult and child journeys at the hours they occur. A higher rent near school can be better value than daily buses, taxis and lost family time.
