Mobile plans, broadband and streaming in Malaysia

Malaysia has deep mobile competition and strong urban fibre, but the useful question is not which provider has the biggest headline allowance. It is which line remains valid for your immigration position, works inside the chosen home and school, and can support a family without hidden speed caps or a long broadband contract you cannot take with you.

The short answer

How should a family get connected in Malaysia?

Start with registered prepaid or eSIM from an official operator, test more than one network at the exact address, and choose a longer-term line only after understanding document and validity rules. For home internet, compare Unifi, TIME and other serviceable providers at property level. TIME can be excellent where available, but its building footprint is not universal; Unifi has a broader fixed-network role.

Compare mobile plans by real family use

Published examples are a starting point, not a recommendation. Prices, allowances and promotions were checked on 2 September 2026; confirm the current official offer and registration route before buying.

Comparison 01

CelcomDigi

Large merged operator with prepaid, postpaid and digital eSIM choices.

Published example

Its current prepaid page displayed 30-day plans from RM30 for 50GB to RM65 with a 400GB fair-use allowance and entertainment access.

Comparison 02

Hotlink / Maxis

Major consumer alternative with prepaid, postpaid and eSIM products.

Published example

Useful as a second live network test rather than choosing only from brand familiarity.

Comparison 03

U Mobile, Unifi Mobile and others

Can add price competition or strong local performance.

Published example

A value plan is useful only if coverage and congestion work at the family's actual addresses.

Broadband belongs in the property research

Check the exact home, not just the provider's coverage map

A provider may serve the street but have no port, permission or reliable indoor Wi-Fi for one unit. Ask for an address-specific result before the lease becomes difficult to undo.

01

Unifi Home

Broad fixed-network reach with several speeds and optional ecosystem bundles.

The official page displayed online examples from RM144.90 for 100 Mbps to RM374.90 for 2 Gbps when checked.

02

TIME

Strong fibre performance in serviceable buildings, often attractive to renters because several term choices are shown.

The official page displayed RM99 for 200 Mbps and RM199 for 1 Gbps, with 24-month, 12-month and no-contract choices when checked.

03

Other fibre or fixed wireless

Maxis fibre and mobile/fixed-wireless options can fill an address or timing gap.

Useful for a short stay or where the preferred fibre port is unavailable.

The city name is not a signal test

Connectivity changes from one address to the next

Use these location patterns to focus your questions. They cannot replace a test in the exact room where the family will work, study and sleep.

Kuala Lumpur

The deepest provider and fibre choice, but building management and ports can constrain individual units.

Watch for
A new tower may have limited active ports; a central condo can still have poor indoor mobile coverage.
Research from home
Ask management for current providers and installation rules, then test two mobile networks in the unit.

Penang

Strong connectivity around developed island and mainland corridors, with address variation away from dense areas.

Watch for
The island's hills and building structure can create local mobile differences.
Research from home
Test the home-school route and confirm fibre serviceability before paying a holding deposit.

Johor Bahru

Good urban options across a spread-out metro, with new developments sometimes ahead of completed infrastructure.

Watch for
Marketing for a development may describe planned rather than installed service.
Research from home
Request the exact provider account/port evidence and installation lead time for the unit.

Bring the profiles, not the billing assumptions

Move streaming and app-store accounts one at a time

Country, billing, catalogue, family and device rules are different for every service. Keep a simple account list and change nothing until the local payment route and recovery details work.

Mobile entertainment bundles

Some CelcomDigi prepaid plans include Prime Video or Viu and other providers bundle content. The included service, tier and fair-use allowance can change.

Broadband and TV

Unifi and other home providers may package TV, devices or mobile benefits with the line.

Netflix and Spotify

Permanent country moves can change billing, price and catalogue. Spotify may require a payment method issued in Malaysia for Premium country changes.

Apple and Google family accounts

Store-country changes can affect subscriptions, balance, Family Sharing and content availability.

Keep access before changing regions. Save recovery codes, add an authenticator or passkey where supported, check every child's account and preserve the old phone number until the family has tested sign-in and recovery abroad.

A calm order for the first month

Set up connectivity without locking yourself out

Each step should leave the family with more access than before. Do not cancel, port, change device and change account country on the same day.

  1. 01

    Register a temporary line

Use an official operator channel and keep proof that the number is registered to the correct adult and document.

  2. 02

    Compare the actual speed policy

Separate high-speed quota, fair-use threshold, capped-speed 'unlimited' data, hotspot and auto-renewal.

  3. 03

    Test two networks

Run calls, maps, school apps and hotspot tests at home, school and the regular journey.

  4. 04

    Match broadband to the lease

A 24-month discount is not a saving if the family expects to move; compare 12-month, no-contract and relocation terms.

  5. 05

    Move subscriptions carefully

Audit app stores, family groups, balances and payment cards before changing the organiser's region.

Common questions

Questions about phones, broadband and streaming in Malaysia

What is the best mobile network in Malaysia for families?

CelcomDigi, Maxis/Hotlink, U Mobile and Unifi Mobile can all be relevant. The best choice depends on indoor coverage, congestion, hotspot use, speed caps and the home-school route. Start prepaid and test two networks before moving important accounts.

Can foreigners buy a prepaid SIM in Malaysia?

Yes, subject to current identity-registration rules and operator checks. Use your own passport or accepted resident documentation through an official or authorised channel and ask how validity changes when the line is registered as a tourist rather than a resident.

What does unlimited mobile data mean in Malaysia?

It may still have a maximum speed, fair-use quota, hotspot limit or reduced speed after a threshold. Compare the product disclosure and app terms, not only the word unlimited.

How much does fibre broadband cost in Malaysia?

Prices vary by address, speed, term and promotion. In September 2026, official examples included TIME from RM99 for 200 Mbps and Unifi online offers from RM144.90 for 100 Mbps. Check service tax, installation, equipment and post-promotion cost.

Is TIME or Unifi better for a family home?

TIME can offer strong value and flexible terms in covered buildings; Unifi has a broader network footprint. Neither can be selected sensibly without checking the exact unit, available ports, installation timing and how a move affects the contract.

Do Malaysian mobile or broadband plans include streaming?

Some do. Current CelcomDigi examples include entertainment on selected prepaid plans, and fixed providers also sell content bundles. Verify the included tier, account linking, duration, renewal price and fair-use terms.

Will our streaming services work after moving to Malaysia?

Many operate in Malaysia, but catalogue, price, billing currency, payment method, app-store availability and household rules can differ. Follow each service's official country-move process rather than using a VPN as a relocation plan.

What broadband backup should remote workers use in Malaysia?

Keep a hotspot-capable SIM on a different mobile network from any fixed-wireless line, plus power backup and a tested alternate workspace. In fibre buildings, ask whether common equipment loses power during an outage.
