UK-to-destination family route

Moving to Thailand from the UK: 2026 family guide

Thailand can feel easy to reach from Britain, but a holiday arrival and a workable family move are two different things. Build the Thai immigration, school and healthcare plan while you close down the right UK commitments—not after the flights are booked.

Non-stop London–Bangkok services are available, with schedules varying by season. Families bound for Chiang Mai, Phuket or another province should compare a through ticket with separate domestic flights, baggage rules and missed-connection protection.

One move, two connected plans

Finish the UK departure work while you build the Thailand arrival

A family move can fail on either side. Keep tax, healthcare, accounts and the departure date moving in step with immigration, school, housing and insurance at the destination.

Plan A · leave well

Close the right UK loops

Work through tax residence, HMRC reporting, NHS and prescriptions, pensions and investments, the family home and provider access. Keep the evidence together.

Open the UK departure hub

Plan B · arrive legally

Build a workable life in Thailand

Confirm the long-stay route for every family member, then line up school, healthcare, housing, money and the first local registrations.

The route at a glance

What changes between Britain and Thailand

Use these as planning anchors, then verify live entry and airline rules close to travel.

01

Time difference

Thailand is 6–7 hours ahead

Six hours during British Summer Time; seven when the UK is on GMT.

02

Everyday currency

Thai baht (THB)

Keep GBP access during the transition and compare the full transfer cost, not only the headline rate.

03

Short visit

Usually up to 60 days visa-free

For a full British citizen passport and permitted visitor activity; this is not residence or work permission.

04

Before arrival

Thailand Digital Arrival Card

Complete the official form within the three days before arrival.

Entry is not residence

British-passport entry is useful for research trips, not a family residence plan

Current FCDO guidance says a full British citizen passport should have at least six months left after arrival and at least one blank page. Eligible visitors can normally enter for up to 60 days for tourism and specified short activities, with a possible extension of up to 30 days. Work, study and longer residence require the correct Thai route.

  1. 1

Check every passport separately, including children’s passports; do not calculate validity from the booking date.

  2. 2

Complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card only through the official Thai system and save the confirmation offline.

  3. 3

Choose the long-stay route for the real purpose of the move: employment, study, family, retirement, remote work or another eligible category.

  4. 4

Map dependant status and work rights for each adult. A spouse’s status does not automatically permit employment.

  5. 5

Plan for Thailand’s 90-day reporting requirement if a family member stays continuously for more than 90 days, and check re-entry permission before travel.

Make permission concrete

Three conversations to have before the move becomes expensive

Write down the official answer, the source and the date. A route that works for the principal applicant may still leave a gap for a spouse or child.

01

Before committing to school or rent

Confirm the principal applicant, eligible dependants, required financial evidence, insurance conditions and whether approval must happen before travel. Ask the Thai embassy or immigration authority—not a landlord or social-media group—to confirm the route.

02

Before resigning or fixing the departure date

Check whether the visa depends on an employer, school, marriage, age, income or a Thai sponsor. Build time for translated, certified or legalised records where the chosen category requires them.

03

Before leaving Thailand later

Find out whether a re-entry permit is needed to protect the stay permission. Keep expiry, extension and reporting dates in a shared family calendar.

Flights and family time

Use Bangkok as the route anchor, then price the family’s real final journey

A London–Bangkok fare is not the whole move if home, school or temporary accommodation is elsewhere. Compare one protected itinerary against self-connecting tickets, overnight airport stays, pet routing and the baggage included for every traveller.

  • Schedule important UK calls for the Thai afternoon or evening; Thailand does not change its clocks.
  • Allow a gentle first week if children are crossing six or seven time zones and starting school soon after arrival.
  • Keep medicines, identity records, school essentials and several days of clothing in cabin baggage within airline limits.

The school handover

Match the school calendar and commute before choosing a Bangkok, Chiang Mai or Phuket home

Thailand has British-curriculum, IB and other international-school options, but availability, fees, deposits and travel times vary sharply by city and campus. A familiar curriculum may ease continuity; the practical fit still depends on admissions timing, support needs and the daily journey.

  1. 1

Ask the UK school for reports, attendance, curriculum coverage, exam-course details, safeguarding or support records and a named contact.

  2. 2

Confirm the receiving school’s year placement, assessment, English-language support, additional-needs provision and withdrawal terms in writing.

  3. 3

For GCSE, A-level or IB years, compare subject availability and exam boards before assuming a smooth transfer.

  4. 4

Test the school run at the time children would actually travel, including a wet-season fallback.

The money handover

Bridge sterling commitments and baht spending without relying on one account

UK direct debits, tax, property costs and subscriptions may continue after Thai spending begins. Thai account opening depends on the bank, branch and immigration evidence, so arrive with more than one working card and a documented way to transfer money.

  1. 1

Tell UK banks and investment providers about the address change and confirm what services remain available to a Thai resident.

  2. 2

Compare transfer fees, exchange-rate margin, Thai receiving charges and ATM costs as one total.

  3. 3

Keep an emergency reserve outside the everyday spending account and make sure both adults can access it.

  4. 4

Treat UK and Thai tax residence as separate legal tests; use the UK departure and Thailand tax guides together.

Cost of living in Thailand

Pack evidence, not guesswork

Build one secure family document pack

Keep originals safely, encrypted copies available to both adults and a small offline arrival folder. Verify whether the exact application needs an original, certified copy, translation, apostille or other authentication before ordering it.

Identity and family

Passports, long-form birth certificates, marriage or civil-partnership records, custody or consent documents, passport photos and certified copies where requested.

Work and immigration

Qualifications, employment evidence, sponsor documents, police or health evidence if required, approval notices and a clear copy of every immigration submission.

Health and school

Clinical summaries, prescriptions using generic medicine names, vaccination records, school reports, support plans and admissions correspondence.

Shipping and pets

An inventory with values and serial numbers, insurance evidence, import permissions and the destination-specific veterinary timeline. Do not ship restricted items on an assumption.

The first week

Four arrival tasks that protect the rest of the move

Do the time-sensitive legal and access work first. Furniture, memberships and a perfect routine can wait.

  1. 01

Save the British Embassy Bangkok contact and FCDO travel-advice page, but use Thai authorities for visa and residence decisions.

  2. 02

Keep proof of address and ask the accommodation provider who will complete any required foreign-guest residence notification.

  3. 03

Arrange local SIMs and account access before UK numbers are cancelled; preserve a route to receive security codes.

  4. 04

Register insurance and preferred hospitals before anyone needs care, then note the nearest suitable emergency department.

Common questions

Questions about moving from the UK to Thailand

Can a British family move to Thailand without a visa?

No. Eligible British citizens may be able to visit visa-free for a limited period, but living, working or studying in Thailand needs the appropriate immigration status. Decide the route for each family member before treating the move as viable.

How long can a British citizen stay in Thailand visa-free?

Current FCDO guidance says holders of full British citizen passports can normally enter for up to 60 days for tourism and specified short activities, with a possible extension of up to 30 days. Rules and permitted activities can change, so check official guidance immediately before travel.

Do British children need their own Thailand entry documents?

Yes. Each child needs a valid passport and the immigration evidence relevant to their status. Families travelling with only one parent should also carry suitable consent and relationship records where appropriate.

Are there direct flights from the UK to Thailand?

Non-stop London–Bangkok services are available, although airlines and seasonal frequencies change. Other Thai destinations usually need an onward connection, so compare baggage transfer and missed-connection protection.

Is Thailand six or seven hours ahead of the UK?

Both can be correct. Thailand remains on UTC+7; it is six hours ahead when the UK uses British Summer Time and seven hours ahead when the UK is on GMT.

Can my spouse work as my dependant in Thailand?

Do not assume so. Stay permission and permission to work are separate. Check the conditions of the exact dependant route and any work-authorisation requirement before a spouse accepts or performs work.

Should we choose a school or a home first?

Shortlist them together, but confirm a realistic school place and commute before signing a long lease. Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket create very different school, transport and healthcare patterns.

Can the British Embassy arrange a Thai visa?

No. British consular staff can provide certain support to British nationals, but Thai immigration decisions belong to Thai authorities. Use the Royal Thai Embassy and official Thai immigration sources for visa questions.
