Plan a relocation scouting trip to Thailand
A useful Thailand research visit does not squeeze Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket into one rushed loop. Each offers a different kind of family life: Bangkok's road and rail geography, Chiang Mai's seasonal air quality and compact neighbourhoods, and Phuket's island roads and varying access to schools and medical care. Choose the strongest one or two before flying.

The short answer
What should a scouting trip prove?
In Bangkok, plan around the exact campus and time both directions at arrival and dismissal; being near rail does not solve every part of the journey. In Chiang Mai, consider how the family responds to current air conditions and confirm an annual filtration or temporary-leave plan. In Phuket, stay near the coastal area you are considering and test road, school and hospital access in wet weather. Verify private schools through Thailand’s OPEC search before arranging tours.
Do the groundwork first
Work out what you can check at home and what needs a visit
Give every appointment a clear question to answer. If official guidance or a provider’s written reply already rules an option out, remove it before spending precious time there.
| Decision | Finish at home | Test there | Leave with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bangkok corridor | Match campuses to BTS/MRT, school transport and realistic home districts. | Time the walk/last mile and road route at both school peaks; inspect flood alternatives. | A two-route school corridor and a maximum daily travel time. |
| Chiang Mai viability | Research official PM2.5 history, school filtration and the family’s health threshold. | Read Air4Thai, inspect seals/filters and test ordinary travel in current conditions. | Monitor–reduce–leave triggers and a costed seasonal plan. |
| Phuket corridor | Choose school, coast and hospital on one side of the island where possible. | Drive the route in rain/peak traffic and inspect drainage, slope and backup access. | One viable corridor—not an island-wide list. |
| School and status | Verify OPEC record, curriculum/accreditation, place, fees and visa-document role. | Observe the exact campus and get every promise in writing. | Child-specific offer/cost/support evidence. |
| Home and care | Check agent/landlord authority, TM30 responsibility, hospital specialties and insurance network. | Inspect utilities, mould/drainage, emergency route and direct ambulance contact. | Two address options and named care routes. |
A focused seven-day visit
Give each day one main relocation question
This is a flexible research plan, not a fixed itinerary. Protect sleep, school opening days and unplanned family time; move an appointment rather than cramming too much into the day.
- 00Day 0
Arrive without deciding

- Protect sleep and medication; make no irreversible commitments.
- Afternoon
- Walk the immediate area, buy a simple meal and note first practical friction.
Keep: Arrival route, first-night problems and questions—not a verdict.
- 01Day 1
Test the weekday skeleton
- Morning
- Travel a real home-to-school or work route at the correct peak time.
- Afternoon
- Repeat the return direction; inspect groceries, pharmacy, play and ordinary food nearby.

- Afternoon
- Give each family member unstructured time in the candidate area.
Keep: Belonging, independence and weekend-cost notes.
- 06Day 6
Re-test, compare, leave
- Morning
- Repeat the weakest critical route or revisit the disputed property/provider.
- Afternoon
- Score evidence separately before discussing; record unknowns and the cheapest next proof step.

Try an ordinary weekday
See how daily life feels when conditions are less convenient
A calm Sunday, dry road and staged show home tell you very little. Repeat important journeys at a busy time or in wet weather where it is safe to do so.
The school-run test
Start at a plausible front door, reach the correct campus gate at arrival time and repeat dismissal in the opposite direction.
The whole-home check
Inspect the street, entrance, stairs or lift, rooms, water, power, internet, fire route and child-safety boundaries together.
The care-route test
Find the appropriate emergency entrance, paediatric route, pharmacy, direct number, payment process and insurer contact.
The ordinary-life test
Buy the difficult groceries, use a laundrette or local service, find shade/play and complete one family activity without a curated driver.
Five meetings worth the time
Arrive with the written question already asked
Pre-book only providers that survive the remote checks. The visit then compares written claims with the exact campus, unit, branch, professional or vehicle.
| Meeting | Ask before travel | Observe there | Evidence to keep |
|---|---|---|---|
| School or nursery | Current place availability, year group, complete fees, documents, support needs and tour contact. | Arrival/dismissal, classroom practice, safeguarding boundaries, toilets, shade and how staff respond to the child. | Written admissions position, fee schedule, support answer, calendar and transport coverage. |
| Property agent / landlord | Authority, exact unit, total move-in cash, contract language, utilities, maintenance and viewing conditions. | Street-to-unit continuity, defects, noise, damp, drainage, fire route, pool/balcony and phone signal. | Identity/authority, draft terms, inventory, dated media, bills and address-level risk checks. |
| Hospital / clinic | Relevant specialty, hours, emergency route, language, insurer network, direct billing and deposit process. | Registration, triage route, accessibility, pharmacy, after-hours access and realistic journey time. | Named facility/branch, service confirmation, direct numbers and insurer’s written network answer. |
| Immigration or regulated adviser | Status route, each dependant, work/study rights, evidence, timing, renewals and failure scenario. | Whether answers distinguish visitor entry from residence and cite current official rules. | Written scope, fees, responsible professional/entity and official sources—not a verbal promise. |
| Relocation / transport provider | Exact deliverables, licences where relevant, conflicts/referral fees, vehicle and cancellation terms. | Whether the provider tests your shortlist or merely sells its inventory. | Named operator, written scope, complete price, insurance and complaint route. |
Organise what you learn
Leave with five useful folders, not one camera roll
Record the date, exact place or provider and the conditions behind each conclusion. Take photographs only where permitted and keep sensitive family records securely.

Make a clear decision
End with proceed, pause or reject
Write down your views separately before discussing them as a family. “We liked it” matters, but it does not answer questions about visas, school support, annual costs or what happens if plans change.
The visa route, school or care fit, affordable home area and backup plan are all supported by reliable information.
The place may work, but one or more critical questions remain unanswered or have not been checked in the relevant season.
A non-negotiable fails, the total annual risk is too high or everyday life would be unsustainable for the family.
If you cannot make a scouting trip
Use careful remote research, while accepting its limits
Remote checks can eliminate unsuitable options and reduce risk. They cannot fully show noise, street conditions, how a child responds to a school or what a home feels like in person.
Direct a live school call
Ask the admissions lead and relevant support staff the same child-specific questions planned for the tour.
Commission an uncut property route
Require a live street-to-unit sequence, services under load and a second call at a difficult time.
Check journeys in more than one way
Combine official networks, school transport answers, live traffic at different times and a local video of the route.
Use a reversible landing
If critical sensory evidence is still missing, begin with suitable temporary housing instead of a long lease.
Take the research with you
Use the downloadable planning pack before booking the visit
Narrow the city or country shortlist from home, then use the trip to answer only the questions that remain.

A scouting trip is most useful once you have a shortlist. Use the destination guides to decide which questions about schools, homes, healthcare and journeys can only be answered in person.
Common questions
Questions about a relocation scouting trip to Thailand
How many Thai cities can a family scout in one week?
One properly, or two with a clear domestic-flight or rail transfer and fewer tests in each. Bangkok alone can absorb a week because school and home corridors are geographically distinct. Visiting Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket usually produces impressions rather than repeatable weekday evidence.
When should we scout Bangkok?
Visit while the shortlisted schools are operating and run routes on normal weekdays. If flood exposure matters, official BMA data and wet-season evidence are valuable even when the visit is dry. Avoid treating a public holiday or school break as a representative traffic test.
How should we test Chiang Mai smoke-season suitability?
Use official Air4Thai readings and historic patterns, discuss the child’s needs with clinicians, inspect school/home filtration and write action thresholds. One clear-air visit cannot prove smoke-season viability; remote evidence and a reversible seasonal plan may be more honest.
What should families test in Phuket?
Test one home–school–hospital corridor in both directions, during rain or peak conditions where possible. Inspect drainage, slope, road alternatives, water/power arrangements and emergency access. A beautiful weekend drive across the island does not prove a school-week routine.
How do we verify an international school in Thailand?
Search the exact school through Thailand’s Office of the Private Education Commission and verify claimed IB, Cambridge or British Schools Overseas status through the issuing body. Then ask the campus for current place, year group, support, fees and transport evidence.
Should we pay a Thailand rental deposit during the trip?
Only after verifying the lessor/agent, exact unit, written contract, complete entry cash, utilities, inventory, defects and TM30 responsibility. A viewing deadline is not a substitute for review. Temporary housing is safer when the school or corridor remains uncertain.
What healthcare test belongs in a Thailand scouting trip?
Visit the exact private/public facility relevant to the family, find emergency and paediatric routes, confirm insurer network/direct billing and save direct numbers. Thailand’s 1669 network is important, but a family preferring a particular private hospital should also understand its ambulance service and response area.
