Plan a relocation scouting trip to Vietnam
Vietnam’s three main family choices are far enough apart that a rushed multi-city visit is rarely useful. Ho Chi Minh City brings traffic, heat and flood risk; Hanoi adds winter damp and seasonal air pollution; Da Nang puts coast, river and city close together but still requires careful checks for typhoons, flooding and building condition. Choose one city for a focused week.

The short answer
What should a scouting trip prove?
Use visitor permission only as permission to research, not evidence of a durable residence or work route. In each city, pair the exact school campus with housing before viewing properties, run road journeys at school peaks and verify foreigner temporary-residence reporting with the accommodation party. Use the Ministry of Health’s hospital directory and Vietnam’s national weather service to test named care and climate routes.
Do the groundwork first
Work out what you can check at home and what needs a visit
Give every appointment a clear question to answer. If official guidance or a provider’s written reply already rules an option out, remove it before spending precious time there.
| Decision | Finish at home | Test there | Leave with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ho Chi Minh City | Pair exact campuses with District 2/Thu Duc, District 7 or other credible corridors. | Run both peak directions; inspect flood/drainage, heat and last-mile walking. | One campus-home-care triangle with alternatives. |
| Hanoi | Compare Tay Ho/western compounds and newer districts against school and air evidence. | Inspect winter comfort/condensation or seasonal filtration; time cross-city routes. | A home envelope and air-response plan. |
| Da Nang | Map school choice, river/coast flood exposure and hospital capability. | Inspect wind/rain resilience, drainage, bridge alternatives and exact medical route. | A climate-tested corridor and referral plan. |
| Status and school | Separate e-visa/visitor entry from a durable employer, investment or family route; verify school claims. | Use written provider/adviser answers and observe the exact campus. | Credible family-status route and child-specific school evidence. |
| Home administration | Get draft bilingual terms, owner/agent evidence, utilities and foreigner reporting process. | Match exact unit, meters, defects and accommodation party to the documents. | A reviewable contract file—not a cash reservation. |
A focused seven-day visit
Give each day one main relocation question
This is a flexible research plan, not a fixed itinerary. Protect sleep, school opening days and unplanned family time; move an appointment rather than cramming too much into the day.
- 00Day 0
Arrive without deciding
- Morning
- Protect sleep and medication; make no irreversible commitments.
- Afternoon
- Walk the immediate area, buy a simple meal and note first practical friction.
Keep: Arrival route, first-night problems and questions—not a verdict.
- 01Day 1
Test the weekday skeleton
- Morning
- Travel a real home-to-school or work route at the correct peak time.
- Afternoon
- Repeat the return direction; inspect groceries, pharmacy, play and ordinary food nearby.
Keep: Two timed journeys and a neighbourhood services map.
- 02Day 2
Visit schools or childcare
- Morning
- Tour shortlisted campuses with child-specific questions and current documents.
- Afternoon
- Travel from each campus to two realistic housing areas at dismissal time.
Keep: Written details of places, year groups, support, fees and transport.
- 03Day 3
Inspect homes and their surroundings
- Morning
- View ordinary homes—not only premium show units—and walk the full route from the street into every room.
- Afternoon
- Revisit the best street after rain, school pickup, evening traffic or nearby construction activity.
Keep: Address-specific notes on condition, cost, access and practical risks.
- 04Day 4
Prove healthcare and failure routes
- Morning
- Visit the likely hospital/clinic and test registration, paediatrics, pharmacy and insurer-network questions.
- Afternoon
- Run the emergency route, backup transport and outage/weather alternative.
Keep: Named care route, direct numbers and payment/insurance process.
- 05Day 5
Live an ordinary Saturday
- Morning
- Use the family’s likely transport, market, sport, worship or community routine.
- Afternoon
- Give each family member unstructured time in the candidate area.
Keep: Belonging, independence and weekend-cost notes.
- 06Day 6
Re-test, compare, leave
- Morning
- Repeat the weakest critical route or revisit the disputed property/provider.
- Afternoon
- Score evidence separately before discussing; record unknowns and the cheapest next proof step.
Keep: Proceed, pause or reject—with reasons and owners.
Try an ordinary weekday
See how daily life feels when conditions are less convenient
A calm Sunday, dry road and staged show home tell you very little. Repeat important journeys at a busy time or in wet weather where it is safe to do so.
The school-run test
Start at a plausible front door, reach the correct campus gate at arrival time and repeat dismissal in the opposite direction.
The whole-home check
Inspect the street, entrance, stairs or lift, rooms, water, power, internet, fire route and child-safety boundaries together.
The care-route test
Find the appropriate emergency entrance, paediatric route, pharmacy, direct number, payment process and insurer contact.
The ordinary-life test
Buy the difficult groceries, use a laundrette or local service, find shade/play and complete one family activity without a curated driver.
Five meetings worth the time
Arrive with the written question already asked
Pre-book only providers that survive the remote checks. The visit then compares written claims with the exact campus, unit, branch, professional or vehicle.
| Meeting | Ask before travel | Observe there | Evidence to keep |
|---|---|---|---|
| School or nursery | Current place availability, year group, complete fees, documents, support needs and tour contact. | Arrival/dismissal, classroom practice, safeguarding boundaries, toilets, shade and how staff respond to the child. | Written admissions position, fee schedule, support answer, calendar and transport coverage. |
| Property agent / landlord | Authority, exact unit, total move-in cash, contract language, utilities, maintenance and viewing conditions. | Street-to-unit continuity, defects, noise, damp, drainage, fire route, pool/balcony and phone signal. | Identity/authority, draft terms, inventory, dated media, bills and address-level risk checks. |
| Hospital / clinic | Relevant specialty, hours, emergency route, language, insurer network, direct billing and deposit process. | Registration, triage route, accessibility, pharmacy, after-hours access and realistic journey time. | Named facility/branch, service confirmation, direct numbers and insurer’s written network answer. |
| Immigration or regulated adviser | Status route, each dependant, work/study rights, evidence, timing, renewals and failure scenario. | Whether answers distinguish visitor entry from residence and cite current official rules. | Written scope, fees, responsible professional/entity and official sources—not a verbal promise. |
| Relocation / transport provider | Exact deliverables, licences where relevant, conflicts/referral fees, vehicle and cancellation terms. | Whether the provider tests your shortlist or merely sells its inventory. | Named operator, written scope, complete price, insurance and complaint route. |
Organise what you learn
Leave with five useful folders, not one camera roll
Record the date, exact place or provider and the conditions behind each conclusion. Take photographs only where permitted and keep sensitive family records securely.
Timed journeys
- Keep
- Start/end pins, date, direction, conditions, wait and door-to-door time.
- Reject
- A route timed once at midday or estimated by an app.
Written capability
- Keep
- Exact branch/campus, current service, named contact, fee and limitation.
- Reject
- Brand-level reassurance or ‘should be possible’.
Details for the exact address
- Keep
- Continuous video, defects, bills, terms, access, noise and hazard information.
- Reject
- A show unit, cropped video or contract arriving after a deposit.
Separate reactions
- Keep
- Each person’s energy, worry, delight and non-negotiable before group discussion.
- Reject
- One enthusiastic adult interpreting silence as agreement.
An owned next step
- Keep
- Question, evidence needed, source, owner, deadline and consequence if unresolved.
- Reject
- Converting an unanswered critical issue into optimism.
Make a clear decision
End with proceed, pause or reject
Write down your views separately before discussing them as a family. “We liked it” matters, but it does not answer questions about visas, school support, annual costs or what happens if plans change.
The visa route, school or care fit, affordable home area and backup plan are all supported by reliable information.
The place may work, but one or more critical questions remain unanswered or have not been checked in the relevant season.
A non-negotiable fails, the total annual risk is too high or everyday life would be unsustainable for the family.
If you cannot make a scouting trip
Use careful remote research, while accepting its limits
Remote checks can eliminate unsuitable options and reduce risk. They cannot fully show noise, street conditions, how a child responds to a school or what a home feels like in person.
Direct a live school call
Ask the admissions lead and relevant support staff the same child-specific questions planned for the tour.
Commission an uncut property route
Require a live street-to-unit sequence, services under load and a second call at a difficult time.
Check journeys in more than one way
Combine official networks, school transport answers, live traffic at different times and a local video of the route.
Use a reversible landing
If critical sensory evidence is still missing, begin with suitable temporary housing instead of a long lease.
Take the research with you
Use the downloadable planning pack before booking the visit
Narrow the city or country shortlist from home, then use the trip to answer only the questions that remain.
Download the Vietnam city research packPrepare before you book
Read the detailed guides before arranging appointments
A scouting trip is most useful once you have a shortlist. Use the destination guides to decide which questions about schools, homes, healthcare and journeys can only be answered in person.
Common questions
Questions about a relocation scouting trip to Vietnam
Can a family scout all three main Vietnam cities in two weeks?
It is possible to visit them, but difficult to test each properly because domestic flights consume weekday capacity. A serious school-and-housing visit works better in one city; two cities can work with tightly pre-arranged tours and enough recovery. Use remote evidence to eliminate the third first.
Is Vietnam’s e-visa a relocation route?
No. It can support a scouting or temporary visit, subject to current eligibility and conditions, but does not by itself create durable family residence or work permission. Verify the long-term legal route before school and housing commitments.
What should families test in Ho Chi Minh City?
Time the exact home–school route at both peaks, inspect drainage and access after heavy rain where possible, test heat and walkability, and visit the relevant hospital branch. District labels are too broad; evidence must belong to an address and campus.
What should families test in Hanoi?
Test cross-city travel, seasonal air/filtration and the home’s winter heating, seals, damp and condensation plan. A visit in one season cannot prove the other; combine field evidence with official air/weather data and written building information.
What should families test in Da Nang?
Test the school-home-hospital triangle, river/coast exposure, bridge alternatives, building drainage and typhoon/flood resilience. Verify whether specialist care would remain local or require referral to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.
Who handles foreigner temporary-residence reporting in Vietnam?
Accommodation providers have reporting responsibilities through the official public-security system. Confirm the responsible party, documents, timing and proof for short stays and any future rental; do not assume an informal landlord will manage it correctly.
Should we reserve a Vietnam apartment during the scouting trip?
Only after verifying the lessor’s right, exact unit, bilingual contract and controlling language, total cash, meters/tariffs, defects, management and temporary-residence process. Use temporary housing when school or legal status remains unresolved.
