International schools in Johor Bahru

Johor Bahru's school market spans Iskandar Puteri in the west, Mount Austin and Ulu Tiram in the east, and several distinct residential corridors between them. Choose the school and campus before the home: a cross-city run or daily border crossing can remove much of Johor's apparent value.

The short answer

What should families know first?

Johor Bahru offers British, American, Cambridge and boarding pathways at very different prices. Current primary tuition examples range from about RM18,400 at Austin Heights to RM125,400 at Marlborough before joining costs and tax. Iskandar Puteri has the deepest premium cluster, while eastern schools may pair better with Mount Austin, Tebrau and Ulu Tiram homes.

School comparison

Compare the curriculum, complete bill and location

We use current school-published fees where they are available and clearly label schools that require a personalised quotation. Every figure is for shortlisting, not a substitute for a written invoice for your child's exact year and support needs.

How we calculated the first-year figure

We used a new nine-year-old entering the closest published Year 5 or Grade 4 equivalent in the latest verified schedule, chose the annual tuition option where available, and added identifiable compulsory joining and development charges. When a current total is not public, we say that a quote is needed. Refundable deposits are explained in each note; optional transport, meals, uniform, devices, trips and individual support are excluded unless stated.

What sits behind the total

Read the small print before comparing two prices

A lower tuition figure is not necessarily a lower first-year bill. Open the current schedule and mark each amount as one-off, refundable, recurring or child-specific.

Admissions and waiting lists

Start early, but ask about a real place before paying

“Applications open” and “places available” are not the same thing. Ask the admissions team to explain the position for the exact year group, start date and support profile.

1

Choose the side of the city

Iskandar Puteri and eastern JB are separate school systems. A lower fee can disappear behind a long daily school run, tolls and a second car.

2

Model tax and deposits

Several schools state that fees are subject to 6% SST, and refundable deposits can equal one term. Put every amount on the first-year cash-flow calendar.

3

Do not depend on the border

A Singapore job or service may be part of family life, but school collection and urgent care need a workable Johor-side plan when the crossing is delayed.

  • Ask whether the year is open, at capacity, using a wait pool or only accepting priority applicants.
  • Confirm what assessment is required, whether it can be completed remotely and when a decision is normally made.
  • Request the offer deadline, deposit treatment, deferral rules and refund position if employment or immigration changes.
  • Ask whether siblings receive priority and whether each child is assessed independently for a place and support.

Accreditation checks

Verify the exact claim, campus and programme

“International”, “British”, “American”, “IB” and “Cambridge” do not all describe the same kind of approval. Check each claim with the body responsible for it.

Marlborough College Malaysia

Verify COBIS/CIS status, exam boards and the exact IB Diploma authorisation for the Malaysian campus.

Raffles American School

Verify current WASC or other accreditation in the issuing body's directory and ask how the diploma transfers to the child's next system.

Crescendo-HELP International School

Verify IPC accreditation, Cambridge registration and the exact A-level examination pathway for the campus.

Austin Heights International School

Verify Cambridge registration, IGCSE examination arrangements and current Malaysian approval for the named programme.

Useful distinction: IB candidacy is not authorisation; membership of an association is not always accreditation; and an exam-centre relationship does not prove that every year follows that provider's full curriculum.

Learning and language support

Questions to ask the support lead, not only admissions

A school can be a strong general choice and still be unable to meet one child's needs in one particular year. Ask for a conversation with the person responsible for provision.

  1. 1

Is support capacity available in the exact grade, campus and boarding or day arrangement?

  2. 2

Which EAL, inclusion, counselling, therapy or one-to-one services are included, and what costs extra?

  3. 3

Can the support lead review current reports and speak with the child's existing school before an offer?

  4. 4

How does support continue through IGCSE, IB Diploma, A levels or an American high-school pathway?

  5. 5

What transport supervision and late-collection plan applies when a parent is delayed at work or the border?

School transport and neighbourhoods

Let the confirmed campus shape the home search

Compare the door-to-door journey in school-week traffic, including rain, bus collection, sibling campuses and after-school pickup.

Iskandar Puteri and Medini

Marlborough and Raffles make the west a strong premium school cluster, with newer housing and private care nearby.

Horizon Hills and Bukit Indah

These established western residential areas can balance Iskandar schools with larger family homes and practical retail.

Mount Austin and Tebrau

Austin Heights and eastern services make this a different, locally coherent shortlist from Medini.

Ulu Tiram

CHIS can anchor an east-side plan. A central or western home should only remain if the peak journey proves manageable.

Ask the transport team: Is the route door-to-door or stop-based? Who supervises younger pupils? What is the earliest pickup, latest drop-off and after-activity option? Can routes change, and is a seat guaranteed for the intended address?

Common questions

Questions about international schools in Johor Bahru

How early should we apply to international schools in Johor Bahru?

Begin enquiries six to twelve months before the intended start. Apply earlier for a popular year, boarding place or specialist support, and ask whether the exact grade has space before paying a non-refundable fee.

Does an application or assessment fee guarantee a place?

No. It pays for the admissions process. Keep the housing plan flexible until the school confirms the year group, campus, support and written offer.

What does the first-year estimate include?

It uses one new primary-age pupil and the clearest current published charges we could verify. Where a school does not publish a complete fee schedule, we label the figure as incomplete instead of inventing a total. Transport, meals, uniforms, devices, trips and individual support remain extra unless stated.

How do we check a school's accreditation?

Search the accreditor or programme provider's own directory, match the exact campus and programme, and distinguish membership, candidacy and authorisation from full accreditation.

What should we ask about learning support?

Send recent reports and assessments before applying. Ask about capacity in the correct grade, staffing, services included in tuition, extra charges and what happens if needs become clearer after entry.

Should we choose a home before a school in Johor Bahru?

Usually no. Confirm a realistic school place, then test the route at drop-off, collection and after-activity times. A short map distance can still create a difficult weekday routine.

Are these schools ranked or sponsored?

No. This is an independent research comparison, not a league table. Sponsored directory visibility does not affect this guide or SettleHappy's destination scores.

Will school fees in Malaysia stay the same?

Do not assume so. Request the current schedule, model later year groups and read withdrawal, refund, tax and notice rules before paying.

Which part of Johor Bahru has the most international schools?

Iskandar Puteri has a notable premium cluster, including Marlborough and Raffles American. Mount Austin, Tebrau and Ulu Tiram offer separate eastern choices. Pick the school first because east–west travel can be substantial.

Are Johor Bahru international schools cheaper than Singapore schools?

Some published tuition is lower, but a useful comparison includes joining fees, SST, transport, exchange costs and the time and immigration risk of any border crossing. Do not plan a child's daily school run across the border without a fully lawful, tested arrangement.

Does Johor Bahru offer school boarding?

Yes. Marlborough College Malaysia and Raffles American School publish boarding options. Check age, room type, weekend and holiday closures, healthcare, guardianship, transport and every residential charge separately from tuition.
